What are the responsibilities and job description for the Surgical Scrub Tech position at Southeast Alabama Surgical?
Overview:
The scrub tech’s primary function is to provide direct assistance to the surgeon during surgical procedures. The scrub tech is also responsible for the sterilization of instruments and supplies needed in the OR suite. The position is under the overall supervision of the Director of Nursing/Administrator and works under the direct supervision of the circulating nurse.
Position Scope:
The position responsibilities deal mainly with the sterility of instruments and supplies and the practice of aseptic technique in the OR.
Position Functions:
1. : Provides safe patient care to the operative patient by being able to effectively assist the surgeon during surgical procedures.
2. : Maintains sterile technique in the OR during surgical procedures and when processing instruments and supplies.
3. : Effectively communicates with all members of the OR team.
4. : Provides for the safe packaging of sterile supplies in adequate numbers to meet the needs of the surgery schedule. Restocks sterile room while observing proper ordering and storing of supplies.
Position Activities:
- Demonstrates knowledge of the principles and practices of aseptic technique.
- Assumes responsibilities according to the operating room to which assigned.
- Scrubs for surgical procedures as assigned.
- Communicates to the circulating nurse any problems that arise during the surgical procedure.
- Demonstrates knowledge of equipment, instruments, supplies, and procedures.
- Assists with the cleaning of the operating room before and after surgical procedures.
- Responsible for cleaning, maintaining, and sterilizing instruments as assigned.
- Operates sterilizers as assigned and provides quality control documentation.
- Restocks sterile room and sink areas in hallway.
- Participates in orientation of new scrub technicians and helps to cross-train other scrub technicians in their own area of expertise.
- Contributes to the Quality Improvement Program as necessary.
- Participates in team meetings.
- Initiates sponge and sharp counts, as necessary.
- Folds linen, as necessary.
- Performs other duties as needed to ensure the safety and comfort of all customers as well as the efficient operation of the facility.
Education and Experience:
Must have passed the scrub technician program and be a certified scrub technician or have had at least two (2) years successful experience in an operating room performing the duties of a scrub technician. Must know and be able to carry out aseptic technique. Must be able to anticipate surgeon’s needs and act accordingly.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to work in the operating room, standing for long periods of time; Must have adequate hearing and vision with the absence of any back problems.

This is a PRN (as needed) position. Hours vary and are dependent upon the facility's surgical schedule. Estimated days are 0-2/week. There is no minimum or guaranteed number of hours.
Pay: From $27.75 per hour
