Job Summary: The Veterinary Medical Director is responsible for overseeing the medical operations and high-quality veterinary care for the Southampton Animal Shelter’s on-site Wellness Clinic and Mobile Clinic. This role involves providing leadership, guidance, and support to the veterinary team, as well as implementing best practices and veterinary protocols. The Medical Director also plays a crucial role in fostering a positive work environment and maintaining strong relationships with all shelter staff, clients and referring veterinarians.
Duties and Responsibilities:
· Provide and implement policies and protocols to ensure high-quality patient care.
· Optimize clinic workflows and operational efficiency to enhance the overall client experience.
· Schedule and lead team meetings to promote effective communication and teamwork.
· Recruit, train, and manage veterinary staff, including performance evaluations and ongoing professional development.
· Oversee and perform the medical aspects of veterinary care, ensuring adherence to best practices, standards, and regulations.
· Collaborate with the veterinary team to develop and implement treatment plans for animals we serve.
· Review and approve medical records, diagnostic test results, and treatment plans.
· Stay abreast of advancements in veterinary medicine and promote continuing education for the veterinary team.
· Provide guidance and support for complex cases and emergencies.
· Build and maintain relationships with clients, ensuring excellent customer service and client satisfaction.
· Act as a point of contact for referring veterinarians, providing timely communication and collaboration.
· Address client concerns or complaints in a professional and compassionate manner.
· Participate in community outreach initiatives to promote the Wellness Clinics and the importance of pet care.
· Ensure we have protocols in place to demonstrate compliance with the NYS Companion Animal Care Standards Act pertaining to veterinary care.
· Ensure compliance with any applicable veterinary laws, regulations, and licensing requirements.
· Implement and oversee quality assurance programs to monitor medical procedures and outcomes.
· Conduct audits and review processes to identify areas for improvement and implement corrective actions.
· Foster a culture of animal care safety, risk management, and continuous improvement.
Experience & Qualifications:
· Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an accredited veterinary school.
· License to practice veterinary medicine in the applicable jurisdiction.
· Several years of clinical experience in a veterinary setting, with a demonstrated track record
of excellence in patient care. Veterinary care experience in a shelter environment is preferred.
· Minimum of 3 years’ leadership or management experience preferred.
· Strong Knowledge of current veterinary medical practices, procedures, and technology.
· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with a
diverse team and communicate complex clinical information to clients.
· Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development and staying current on advances in veterinary medicine.
The Veterinary Medical Director will play a pivotal role in shaping the medical direction and success of our Wellness Clinics. Leadership, veterinary expertise, and management skills will contribute to providing exceptional care for animals and building strong client relationships within the community.
Pay: $130,000.00 - $190,000.00 per year
