- Inspects, diagnoses, and repairs mechanical defects in automobiles, trucks, tractors, compressors, pumps, and similar mechanical equipment.
- Overhauls universal joints, generators, starters, lighting systems, wheel bearings, and hydraulic systems.
- Adjusts and relines brakes; operates brake lathe.
- Performs body and fender repair work.
- Makes emergency repairs out of the shop and in the field when necessary.
- Lubricates and maintains equipment and District vehicles.
- Performs mechanical repairs on internal combustion engines attached to construction and industrial equipment when required in the treatment plant, pump stations, and land application system.
- Operates diagnostic tuning equipment as required.
- Disassembles engines and performs general overhauls.
- Adjusts ignition, carburetor systems, and fuel injection systems.
- Overhauls and repairs transmissions and differentials.
- Builds and installs special equipment.
- Performs generator maintenance for District generators and related equipment.
- Performs installation and repairs of hydraulic systems.
- Completes work reports and uses computerized preventive maintenance software system for work orders and asset management, as required.
- Responds to emergency calls for assistance when available, and accepts standby duty as needed.
- Adheres to and enforces stated safety policies and procedures.
- Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with supervisors, peers, and subordinates.EDUCATION
- High school graduate or equivalent is required.
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to two (2) years of experience in repair and maintenance of vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Requires knowledge of the principles of both gas and diesel internal combustion engines, and the various components used in construction machinery and equipment.
- Requires a valid, current Class A drivers’ license, acceptable by the State of California, with tanker and air brakes, endorsements, and with a driving record which enables insurability within 18 months of hire.
- Requires the ability to locate, adjust, and repair deficiencies or failures.
- Ability to operate various testing and repair equipment and tools.
- Ability to do mechanical work and follow technical manuals on computer to input all data.
- Must know and understand the principles of hydraulics and be able to perform repairs on such systems.
- Requires knowledge of the California State Highway Patrol "BIT" Safety Program.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow written or verbal instructions.
- Requires the ability to maintain cooperative relationships with co-workers and supervisors.
- Must have current, valid CPR and First Aid certificates or ability to obtain within (2) two years of hire.
- Ability to work independently after receiving instructions.
