Description
Performs a variety of skilled tasks such as repairing, maintaining, painting and refinishing walls, doors, ceilings, floors and related or corresponding parts and areas, such as locks, windows, tiles, wall boards, carpeting, plumbing installations and guard rails. Maintains condition of campus grounds through the operation of hand and mechanical equipment and tools; clears roads and pedestrian routes of snow and ice; provides for the care and upkeep of landscape; maintains and repairs vehicles and minor mechanical or plumbing fixtures; performs related duties as required
Examples of Duties
- Prepares surfaces for painting or wallpapering; sands surface, applies spackle or plaster, smooths final finish with steel wool, cloth or other materials.
- Applies paint or adhesive with brush or roller.
- Determines materials to be used; prepares paints, plaster, adhesives and solvents by measuring and mixing components as necessary.
- Installs drywall and ceramic tiles through the proper use and application of required tools and materials.
- Performs sundry carpentry tasks such as hanging doors, installing countertops and cabinets; installs and removes carpeting, linoleum, floor tile; repairs tears and other damage.
- Installs, maintains and repairs door locks, door closers, guard rails, wall fixtures or assists other skilled trades personnel as required.
- Performs maintenance or adjustment to plumbing fixtures.
- Removes snow and ice from walkways, roads, stairs, sidewalks, doorways and all exterior campus property, as directed by manual methods such as shoveling or sweeping or through operation of mechanical equipment.
- Maintains condition of College premises by removing refuse, litter and leaves; repairs holes in lawn or asphalt, removes garbage from refuse containers and transports it to proper disposal area.
- Attends to the upkeep of landscaped and natural grounds and properties by hand and through use of tools and mechanical equipment such as lawn mower, tractor, lawn aerator, trimmers, dump trucks, loaders, edgers, vacuum and pump devices.
- Trims and prunes trees and shrubs; cuts grass; aerates lawn, plants flowers and seedlings; maintains plants through spreading of chemicals; pulls weeds; waters plants and grass and arranges sprinklers where necessary; spreads soil or fertilizer, digs holes for planting or laying sod or stone. Performs all other duties necessary for upkeep of landscaping.
- Repairs tools and mechanical equipment; operates gas arc welding torch; performs metal cutting, operates saws, drills, sanders, etc.
- Assists on construction projects; picks up, moves, transports or delivers supplies; hangs doors and adjusts locks and hinges; removes broken glass or foundation.
- Schedules work and oversees activities of student helpers; checks work and directs others in proper safety procedures.

Typical Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Specialized training, apprenticeship and/or progressive work experience in specific skills relative to duties described.
- Ability to safely and effectively operate and maintain manual and power tools and equipment.
- Ability to pass physical examination may be required.
- Must possess current CDL license under Illinois law.
- Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
- Must successfully pass a criminal background check.
Supplemental Information
STATUS/BENEFITS:
This is a regular full-time Support Staff position for 35 hours a week, 52 weeks a year. Classified Grade X on the Support Staff Salary Schedule. The work hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00am-3:30pm. The position includes the following employee benefits: • $15,600 Annual Flexible Health Benefit: • 10 Vacation, 12 Medical and 3 Personal Days Earned within First Year of Employment • 16 Holidays, 5 Winter break days, 4-Day Summer Workweek
