Visual Arts Instructor Job Description

Overview

At South Sound Dance, our mission is "to provide a loving and nurturing environment to challenge each student to reach their fullest potential." As a Visual Arts Instructor, you will create engaging, age-appropriate visual arts experiences that foster creativity, build artistic skills, and encourage self-expression. You will teach weekly 90-minute classes, develop curriculum, manage classroom supplies, and contribute to student exhibitions and studio events. Your goal is to create a positive learning environment where every student feels encouraged, challenged, and inspired.

Schedule: Weekly 90-minute classes, plus preparation time, required meetings, exhibitions, and seasonal studio events. (Wednesday evening and Sunday afternoon scheduled classes).

Responsibilities:

Curriculum Development & Lesson Planning:

  • Develop age-appropriate curriculum for students of all ages.
  • Create engaging 90-minute lesson plans that build skills progressively throughout the year.
  • Adapt lessons to meet students' developmental needs and abilities.
  • Prepare project samples, instructional materials, and demonstrations.
  • Evaluate and refine curriculum throughout the year to improve student learning and engagement.

Classroom Instruction:

  • Teach with our core values of Connection, Growth, Creativity, Joy, Passion, and Empowerment.
  • Teach a variety of artistic mediums including drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media, and printmaking.
  • Arrive 30 minutes before class to prepare materials and classroom space. Begin and end classes on time.
  • Demonstrate artistic techniques using clear, age-appropriate instruction.
  • Foster creativity, artistic confidence, and technical skill development.
  • Provide individualized support and constructive feedback.
  • Ensure proper use and care of all studio materials and equipment.
  • Create an environment where students feel safe taking creative risks.
  • Provide meaningful feedback and encouragement.

Student Development & Engagement:

  • Build meaningful relationships with students and create an inclusive classroom culture.
  • Encourage confidence, creative problem-solving, and artistic growth.
  • Celebrate student achievements and document progress when appropriate.
  • Support student participation in exhibitions and studio events.

Exhibitions & Special Events:

  • Help plan and participate in student exhibitions, showcases, Open House, Halloween Hoopla, and other studio events.
  • Photograph student artwork and classroom activities in accordance with studio policies.
  • Collaborate with the teaching team on special projects and community events.

Budget & Supply Management:

  • Plan projects within the approved classroom budget.
  • Monitor inventory and maintain organized supply storage.
  • Recommend supply purchases and research cost-effective materials.
  • Maintain classroom equipment and ensure materials are stored properly.

Parent & Family Communication:

  • Build positive relationships with students and families.
  • Communicate professionally regarding student growth, participation, and upcoming events.
  • Address questions and concerns respectfully and collaboratively.

Studio Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a clean, organized classroom before and after each class.
  • Return supplies and materials to designated storage areas.
  • Assist fellow instructors and provide substitute coverage when needed.
  • Attend required meetings and professional development.
  • Remain open to coaching, feedback, and professional growth.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Degree or experience in Art Education, Fine Arts, Studio Art, Education, or a related field.
  • Experience teaching visual art to children, teens, and/or adults.
  • Strong foundation in multiple visual art mediums.
  • Experience developing curriculum and lesson plans.
  • Excellent classroom management and organizational skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Reliable, punctual, and self-motivated.
  • Knowledge of child development and age-appropriate teaching practices.
  • Preferred experience planning exhibitions, showcases, or community arts programs.
