Position Summary
South Piedmont Community College is seeking qualified, part-time instructors to teach in its Emergency Medical Services continuing education program, within the Career and Workforce Development division. Instructors deliver classroom (didactic), laboratory (psychomotor), and/or clinical and field instruction in initial credentialing, refresher, recertification, and continuing education courses at the EMR, EMT, AEMT, and/or Paramedic level, in accordance with North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS) education standards and the National EMS Education Standards.
Instructors are responsible for fostering student learning, evaluating student competency across the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains, and supporting the program’s mission to prepare students for state and national credentialing and entry into the EMS workforce.

Essential Duties Summary
- Teach assigned EMS courses at the credentialed level (didactic, lab, clinical, and/or field) following the approved curriculum, course outline, and schedule.
- Prepare and deliver instruction using a variety of teaching methods appropriate to adult learners and the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective objectives of each course.
- Set up, operate, and maintain training equipment, manikins, simulation tools, and supplies; ensure equipment is returned in working order.
- Assess and document student performance through written examinations, skills evaluations, and clinical/field competency verification; maintain accurate and timely records.
- Provide remediation and constructive feedback to support student success and competency attainment.
- Maintain a safe, professional, and inclusive learning environment and enforce program safety and infection-control standards.
- Communicate regularly with the Program Director, lead instructor, and educational medical advisor regarding student progress, scheduling, and program needs.
- Comply with all college policies, OEMS rules (10A NCAC 13P), accreditation standards, FERPA, and applicable clinical-affiliate requirements.
- Participate in instructor workshops, course-coordination meetings, and continuing education as required to maintain credentials.
- Other duties as assigned by the Program Director.
Required Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Current North Carolina EMS credential at or above the level of the course(s) to be taught.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience as an EMS provider with a 911 service.
- Current Healthcare Provider CPR/BLS certification.
- Successful completion of an EMS Methodology class, or the ability to complete one within six (6) months of hire.
- Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and willingness to learn the college’s learning management system (LMS).
Level-Specific Requirements
In addition to the minimum qualifications above, adjuncts must meet the requirements for the level of instruction they are assigned.
- BLS-Level Instructors (EMR / EMT): AHA CPR Instructor certification and NAEMT EVOS (Emergency Vehicle Operator Safety) Instructor certification, or the ability to obtain both within six (6) months of hire.
- ALS-Level Instructors (AEMT / Paramedic): If not already credentialed as a North Carolina OEMS Level I EMS Instructor, must obtain an associate’s degree and the NC OEMS Level I EMS Instructor credential within two (2) years of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s degree or higher from an accredited institution.
- North Carolina OEMS Level I EMS Instructor certification.
- NAEMSE Skill Instructor certification.
- Prior teaching experience at the community college or four-year college level.
- Online or hybrid teaching experience.
- Current, active field experience in the delivery of pre-hospital emergency care.
- For ALS-level adjuncts, the following instructor certifications are also preferred:
- NAEMT AMLS (Advanced Medical Life Support) Instructor.
- NAEMT PHTLS (Prehospital Trauma Life Support) Instructor.
- NAEMT EPC (Emergency Pediatric Care) Instructor.
- AHA ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) Instructor.
Physical Demands
- Ability to demonstrate and evaluate physically demanding EMS skills, including lifting, moving, and positioning patients/manikins (up to 50 lbs), kneeling, bending, and performing CPR.
- May involve exposure to clinical and field environments, including bodily fluids and varied weather conditions; adherence to standard precautions required.
- Schedule may include days, evenings, weekends, and off-site locations depending on course assignment.
