Job Description and Responsibilities

Using leadership, collaboration, and advocacy, the Socio-Emotional Leader Specialist (SELS) plans, delivers, manages, and promotes a comprehensive guidance and counseling program that focuses on student needs and outcomes. As an integral component of the school’s academic mission, the SELS provides systematic, developmental, culturally responsive guidance and counseling essential to the success of each and every student. Data-driven and student-centered, the SELS focuses on the needs, assets, and potential of each student in the areas of academic, personal/social, career, and community participation. 

 

SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIP 

This position reports to a school principal and/or administrator. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

Education:  Bachelors or Masters in counseling or allied field with a license or certificate from an accredited
college/university OR Valid Oregon TSPC license, with a Counseling endorsement. Candidates
enrolled in a masters-level counseling program yielding a license or a certificate will be considered.

Candidates with the ability to enroll in a SEL certification program approved by SLSD will also be considered. 

Experience: Counseling experience, social work, family and human services, de-escalation work, crisis, and behavioral intervention. 

Demonstrate sensitivity/understanding of interpersonal relations with students and persons of diverse cultures and backgrounds required.  Leadership and management skills are highly desirable. 

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with administrators in charge of behaviors to create behavior plans with students, for students. 
  • Collaborate with a school psychologist if a risk assessment is required. 
    • Students who are a threat to themselves or others. 
    • Students who have been impacted by trauma. 
  • Assist teachers in their classroom management. 
    • Check In Check Out, Classroom Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS), delivery of SEL lessons in the classroom.
  • Des-escalate students in crisis
  • Provide on-site support for students who are unable to regulate at school. 
  • Work with Community Resource Specialists to refer students for other resources needed. 
  • Collaborates with the PBIS team to help promote the building of PBIS expectations.  
  • Active member of PBIS/MTSS Behavior Intervention system; plans and facilitates use of Behavior Support room
  • Works closely with SPED case managers to honor IEP, 504, and other disabilities with behaviors.

    • Students that need daily check-ins for stabilization.

    • Mental Health Counselors
    • Probation Officer
  • Design, develop, and deliver instruction in classrooms. 
    •  Suicide Prevention
    • De-escalation cycle
    • PBIS Curriculum
    • Friendships/Healthy Relationships
    • Self-care
    • Socio-emotional lessons (examples: Character Strong or Second Steps)  if applicable in your building (CGHS and LMS have lessons already planned for the advisory period) 
  • Creates and upkeep student behavior folders
  • Understands school-wide/community expectations and engages students who need re-teaching of expectations.
  • Engage or facilitate professional development around behavior support, mental health, equity, culturally-responsive practices, trauma-informed, and restorative practices.
