Music Teacher / Band Director

SKHS Band and Orchestra Director Position Summary The Band and Orchestra Director is responsible for leading a comprehensive high school instrumental music program, including concert, orchestral, marching, and jazz ensembles. The Director serves as the primary instructor for instrumental music classes, selects appropriate curricular materials, and manages all logistical and administrative aspects of the instrumental music program. Core Responsibilities Instruction -Directs Period 2 Concert Band, Period 8 String Orchestra Ensemble, and twice-weekly after-school Orchestra as well as Tuesday night Jazz Band rehearsals. Also teaches one basic piano &/or guitar class elective. The director will serve as Pit Orchestra conductor for the early February Rebel Theater Group Musical (when appropriate). Curriculum & Assessment - Designs and implements music curriculum; manages resources and performance assessments via Google Classroom and maintains official records in Skyward. Logistics & Equipment - Oversees the maintenance, storage, and transport of instruments; coordinates the use of the school department box truck for outdoor pep band/parade events. Program Administration - Manages ensemble rosters, registers groups for RIMEA festivals, encourages and registers students for All State auditions, coordinates all RIMEA-related transportation and field trips. Community Outreach - Conducts four formal concerts, directs pep band for home football games, and leads the marching band in two local community parades Veteran’s Day/Memorial Day). Participates in several other smaller community/school events throughout the year including Graduation. Operational & Monthly Duties ●Summer/Fall Preparation: Distribute technique books and warm-up materials; update ensemble rosters as they change during the first weeks of school. ●Marching/Pep Band Operations: Coordinate with community organizations regarding two local town parades and with the Athletic Director regarding football kickoff times and weather-related cancellations. ●Performance Management: Schedule and conduct mandatory dress rehearsals for all performing groups; communicate updates via Google Classroom. ●Recruitment: Actively recruit band members for after-school Orchestra and Jazz Band and encourage String Ensemble students to "dual enroll" in the Symphony Orchestra. Professional Qualifications ●Education: Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education. RI State K-12 Music Teacher Certification ●Experience: Proven track record in conducting and managing school ensembles preferred.
