Position: School Van Driver
Hours: Approximately 6am to 10am & 1pm to 5pm
Start Date: Immediately
Job Goals: The Van Driver is responsible for safely transporting students to and from school or other designated locations in accordance with district schedules, safety procedures, and all applicable traffic laws and regulations. This position plays a vital role in supporting the district’s commitment to student safety, punctuality, and positive community engagement, particularly for students requiring specialized transportation services.
Supervision: Reports to the Transportation Director
Experience and Training:
1. Must be at least 21 years old
2. Valid driver’s license held for a minimum of three consecutive years
3. Satisfactory driving record with no history of suspension or revocation
4. Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Massachusetts 7D School Pupil Transport License (district may assist in obtaining certification)
5. Ability to pass a background check, including CORI and fingerprints.
6. Effective verbal communication skills
7. Demonstrated responsibility, punctuality, and dependability
8. Prior experience working with children or in student transportation preferred.
Performance Responsibilities:
1. Operate a motor vehicle in a safe and professional manner, adhering to all state and federal traffic regulations
2. Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure compliance with transportation regulations and district policies
3. Perform child checks at the end of each route to ensure no student remains in the vehicle
4. Safely assist students as needed, including helping them enter and exit the van and ensuring they are secured with appropriate restraints (seat belts, car seats, booster seats)
5. Communicate effectively with students, parents, teachers, and staff
6. Maintain clear and professional communication via a two-way radio system
7. Maintain accurate records and follow written and verbal instructions from supervisors
8. Ensure vehicle cleanliness and report maintenance issues promptly
9. Demonstrate a commitment to working with school-aged children, including those with special needs
Evaluation: Performance of the job will be evaluated on a yearly basis by the Director of Transportation
Physical Requirements: The position requires a moderate amount of walking, standing, sitting and climbing stairs and step stool whenever necessary. Activities also include moderate physical exertion in body movement such as reaching, bending, twisting, grasping, pushing, and pulling of objects. The position requires lifting objects of 20 pounds on a frequent basis, and over 20 pounds occasionally.
Environmental Conditions: The employee is required to work outdoors.
