The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation is hiring, and we are looking for motivated, professional individuals ready to commit to making South Dakota a safer place. The duties of a DCI Victim Witness Specialist include providing direct services to victims of crime; acting as the liaison between the victim, the prosecutor, and law enforcement officials; advising victims of legal proceedings and assisting as they navigate through the criminal court process; accompaning victims in criminal proceedings as requested; assisting in determining the amount of monetary damage suffered by the victim; participating in the training of law enforcement and the general public regarding the victimization process, victim needs and issues; helping file compensation claims.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
A firm understanding of the criminal justice system and the criminal justice process. The ideal candidate will be kind, caring, and empathetic.

Knowledge of:

  • role and function of law enforcement, judicial and legal agencies;
  • basic judicial procedures and court documents;
  • principles of interviewing and other information-gathering techniques.

Skills to:

  • deal tactfully with others;
  • communicate clearly and concisely.

Abilities to:

  • interpret and explain laws, rights, policies and procedures;
  • maintain records, prepare reports and correspondence, and related work;
  • organize time and resources to achieve deadlines and goals;
  • effectively communicate and negotiate with others, verbally and in writing, in a pleasant and tactful manner;
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships with victims, families, non-custodial parents, co-workers, court staff, and public officials;
  • maintain confidential clients' records;
  • navigate crisis and trauma;
  • participate in training to stay current on issues, resources, and networking;
  • assist with SAVIN and victim impact statements.

This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.

This position is eligible for Veterans’ Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
