Join an exciting and collaborative team at the South Dakota State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO)! Our mission is to identify, protect, and preserve South Dakota's historic and cultural resources. The Historic Preservation Technical Specialist plays an integral role in advancing that mission through administration of historic preservation incentive programs, review of preservation and compliance projects, and planning and management of important historic preservation initiatives. The successful candidate will also assist with National Register of Historic Places activities and Deadwood Historic Preservation Grant projects in South Dakota's West-Central Region.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

• ability to perform a combination of professional and high-level technical duties in administering financial incentive programs, reviewing projects for technical compliance, and conducting research in the historic preservation field;
• many of the duties and responsibilities will require independent judgement, analysis, and an ability for the individual to make their own decisions and solve problems.;
• the selected candidate must also meet the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards for Historic Preservation;
• a master's degree in Historic Preservation, Architectural History, History, Public History, Historic Architecture, or a closely related field is required. Alternatively a bachelor's degree in the same plus either a minimum of two years of full-time experience in research, writing, teaching, interpretation, or other demonstratable professional activity with an academic institution, historic organization or agency, museum, or other professional institution OR substantial contribution through research and publication to the body of scholarly knowledge in the field of history will suffice.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Correspondence –Creates, proofreads, and edits documents to ensure accuracy and compliance with federal and state statutes. Examples include composing official technical consultation letters for a variety of entities.
• Databases, Records, and Files – Establishes and maintains important information and activities in various systems. Examples include maintaining databases related to Section 106 Review and Compliance activities, managing files for the State Property Tax Moratorium Program and the Federal Historic Preservation Tax Incentives Program, maintaining reference materials, and assisting with website administration.
• Policies, Procedures, and Processes – Researches, interprets, and educates stakeholders regarding the National Historic Preservation Act, applicable South Dakota statutes, and policies governing historic preservation programs and financial incentives.
• State and Federal Financial Incentive Programs for Historic Properties - Assists owners of historic properties in utilizing federal and state historic preservation tax incentive programs.
• Conduct Section 106 and SDCL 1-19A-11.1 Project Reviews - Reviews plans for state permitted and federally assisted projects to ensure compliance with applicable state and federal laws, rules, and regulations.
• Special Projects Management – Ability to manage contracts with private vendors for special projects.
• Technical Assistance - Provides technical assistance in historic preservation to federal, state, tribal, and local governments, property owners, consultants, and the general public.
• Public Outreach and Education - Develops and delivers public outreach materials, presentations, and educational programs regarding historic preservation laws, regulations, funding opportunities, and preservation best practices.
