What are the responsibilities and job description for the STEM Educator Summer Internship position at South Dakota Discovery Center?
Eligibility: College student. Preference will be given to those looking at careers in formal and informal education.
Needs: Good communication skills, willingness to work with children, reliability, & the ability to work independently are essential. Previous CPR/First Aid training is preferred. Ability to assist with traveling programs and setup/tear down is required, which may involve lifting up to 40lbs.
Job Description: STEM Educator Summer Interns help plan and lead hands-on STEM programming for preschool through middle school youth at our facilities and other locations statewide. Your role can include, but is not limited to, assisting with onsite projects, programs, special events, preparing educational materials, and helping promote the SD Discovery Center.
Interns gain skills in hands-on STEM teaching in dynamic learning settings, an understanding of how programs are organized, the ability to lead in a team, training in various STEM curricula and knowledge of STEM resources. Interns will also help support the Living Lab and garden areas.
As a summer intern, you are encouraged to apply for university credit, where applicable, please indicate your interest when applying.
Work Hours: 30–40 hours per week, typically between 8am-5pm, Monday-Friday. Some weekend and evening hours may be requested. Internship start and end time is negotiable, but a 12-week commitment running May 20 through August 9, 2026, is preferred.
Compensation: $15-17/hour, depending on education & experience.
