The Sanford School of Medicine is seeking applications for an LIC Advisor for Neurosciences. The position is responsible for monitoring student participation in the longitudinal integrated clerkship, providing periodic feedback to students on their performance, overseeing student assessment by faculty preceptors, and coordinating discipline specific activities. Serving as an LIC instructor in the clinic setting is expected, and regular attendance at monthly advising committee meetings is critical to this position. The LIC advisor reports to the clerkship director who is ultimately responsible for the direction of the clerkship.

Expectations:
1. Maintain board certification (or board eligibility, if appropriate) through the appropriate specialty board.
2. Understand school-wide educational goals for students as outlined in the Pillar 2 handbook.
3. Communicate specific curricular goals of the respective department and the SSOM as a whole clearly to students and faculty.
4. Provide feedback to individual students and faculty in a skilled manner.
5. Manage a credible, consistent, and fair process of student assessment and grading that will meet legal and accreditation standards and be completed in a timely manner in collaboration with the Offices of Medical Education and Medical Student Affairs.
6. Analyze multiple sources of program evaluation data (e.g. student evaluations, SPEL reports) to effect appropriate quality improvement in the educational program.
7. Collaborate with other LIC advisors and educational leaders to continually improve the educational program.
8. Assist in the development and implementation of remediation for students who do not successfully pass the clerkship.
9. Provide skilled career counseling that includes knowledge of residency programs in the advisor’s specialty.
10. Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and leadership skills with students and faculty.
11. Advise the advising committee chair, clerkship director, and associate dean of medical student education on educational policy and strategic planning, with attention to anticipated changes in resources and societal needs.

Department Description and Cultural Expectations
Expected Productivity Administration
1. Regular communication with and supervision of department faculty at the LIC site.
2. Regular reports to the respective clinical department on curricular issues, faculty contributions, adequacy of patient load for each clerkship site, and student performance.
3. Letters of recommendation as requested for students applying to residency programs.
4. Regular attendance (75%) at monthly meetings of the campus advising committee.
5. Attendance at annual SSOM education retreats.
6. Meeting with the clerkship director at least annually.

Curriculum – Assist the clerkship director with:
1. Annual revision of the discipline-specific core curriculum.
2. Assurance of appropriate student completion of SPEL and report of the adequacy of patient load for each clerkship site.
3. Periodic review of NBME subject examination scores upon release by the assessment and evaluation specialist to assure content mastery.

Assessment
1. Timely completion of student assessments and assistance with obtaining timely assessments from department faculty at the LIC site.
2. Regular participation as facilitators and/or assessors in Pillar 2 activities, e.g. OSCE, Triple Jump, and small group activities as requested by the LIC site.
3. Appropriate communication regarding students with academic difficulty, including referral to the Student Progress and Conduct Committee if warranted.

Assigned Pillar 2 LIC Students
1. Regular contact with the assigned students via email, phone, or face-to-face meetings.
2. Timely review of student files prior to or at each meeting. If faculty assessment data is incomplete, the LIC advisor should reach out to the faculty in their department to complete student assessments.
3. Review of student SPEL data prior to or at each meeting. If student SPEL data is incomplete, the LIC advisor will contact the student to complete entries.
4. Periodic competency-based formative feedback to each assigned student.
5. Taking an LIC student in clinic is expected, on average, one out of every two years.
