Overview
The Entry-Level Utility Engineer supports the South Coast Plaza Office Division (SCPOD) Engineering Team in the safe, efficient, and professional operation of Class A high-rise office buildings. This role is intended for individuals beginning a career in commercial building engineering and facilities management. The Utility Engineer assists with daily operations, preventive maintenance, tenant service requests, and general upkeep of building systems while adhering to SCPOD standards, safety practices, and customer service expectations
Duties & Responsibilities
- Support Building Engineers and the Chief Engineer with daily building operations and preventive maintenance activities
- Perform basic lighting maintenance, including lamp, ballast, and fixture replacements
- Replace HVAC air filters and assist with basic mechanical system maintenance
- Assist with minor electrical tasks under supervision, including basic wiring, device replacement, and GFCI testing
- Pressure wash designated building areas such as loading docks, mechanical spaces, and exterior surfaces
- Assist with basic door, hardware, lock, and minor carpentry repairs
- Respond to tenant service requests and assist with after-hours emergency response as part of the Emergency response rotation
- Assist vendors and contractors during inspections, repairs, testing, and capital projects
- Perform routine building walkthroughs and report deficiencies, safety concerns, or abnormal equipment conditions
- Maintain cleanliness, organization, and professionalism in mechanical rooms, shops, and storage areas
- Follow all SCPOD safety procedures, policies, and documentation requirements
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Basic knowledge of hand and power tools used in commercial building maintenance
- Foundational understanding of electrical systems, basic wiring practices, and safety protocols
- General familiarity with HVAC systems, air distribution, and building mechanical components
- Ability to read basic work orders, checklists, and written procedures
- Strong commitment to safety, teamwork, and customer service
- Ability to communicate effectively with engineers, vendors, and tenants
- Willingness to learn and grow within SCPOD engineering operations
Work Schedule & Availability
- This position requires flexibility and may include shift work, weekends, holidays, and participation in an after-hours emergency response. Attendance and timely response to building needs are essential.
Required Certifications and Licenses
- OSHA 10 certification (required or ability to obtain within designated timeframe)
- EPA Section 608 Certification (preferred or ability to obtain after hire)
- Obtain Fire Pump Certification within a specified timeframe
- Additional SCPOD-provided training on building systems, safety, and procedures
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds
- Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and work at heights when required
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and work for extended periods
- Ability to work in mechanical rooms, rooftops, parking structures, and construction zones
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
Pay: $27.00 per hour
