Job Responsibilities
(Holly Hill Maintenance Unit) Serves as Assistant Shop Foreman while diagnosing and performing repair/replacement of parts as necessary to maintain all SCDOT equipment to include gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, exhaust systems, electrical and hydraulic systems, mowers, blades, safety chains, shields and tires. Assists with Highway Maintenance Management System (HMMS) and other programs that support shop operations; ensures all criteria for shop certifications are met to include maintaining time sheets, work requests, and inputting mechanic's time. Performs welding, fabrications as needed for repairs on various equipment; making modifications on equipment to improve the production of utilizations, including painting and using cutting torches. Instructs shop mechanics daily in safety practices, tasks and ensures all work is performed within Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)/ Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) compliance, verifying paperwork has proper documentation. Performs service calls in the field or wrecker operations to pull equipment back to repair shop or appropriate facility. Performs job duties to include removal of snow and ice and other inclement weather events such as hurricanes, tornados, etc. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum And Additional Requirements
Two (2) years of work experience that involved the independent performance of job duties directly related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Completion of one (1) academic year of a South Carolina High School Automotive Technology or Diesel Engine curriculum may substitute for six (6) months of directly related experience. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires working in a large garage setting and may perform duties in an uncomfortable position for long periods of time. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
