Job Responsibilities
Operates medium equipment such as a tandem dump truck, combination tractor with side-mounted mower, skid steer, and tractors with large mowers > 10' wide in clearing grass and small trees from the highway right-of-way, hauling debris and traffic control signs, and to move spoil materials away from the site. Performs a variety of tasks for the Mowing Crew related to maintenance operations, including, but not limited to, clearing grass and small trees from the highway right-of-way, removing large trees from the right-of-way, cleaning bridge weep holes, and utilizing small equipment such as chain saws and weed eaters to remove trees, limbs, and weeds from around facilities land obstructions. Assists other maintenance crews, as needed, with other maintenance operations to complete routine maintenance work and maintenance plans. Places traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide. Flags traffic in work zones during roadway repair and mowing operations to control flow of traffic to protect workers, general public, and equipment. Conducts daily preventative maintenance activities on all assigned equipment and vehicles to ensure that equipment is greased and lubricated, proper coolant and oil (engine and hydraulic) levels are maintained, hoses and belts are inspected for deterioration, tires are properly inflated, and no leakages are present. Conducts safety inspections on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Assists in tracking and recording daily work performed, including specific accomplishments, work locations, equipment utilization, and quantity of materials used. Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended 12-hour shifts. Operates both anti-icing and removal equipment (snow plows and sand and salt spreaders) during snow and ice response on highways and bridges. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum And Additional Requirements
Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
