Job Responsibilities

Performs skilled highway maintenance worker functions and operates heavy equipment such as: Backhoe, Front End Loader, and Motor Grader. Operates the asphalt tack distributor and serves as back-up driver for operation of the distributor truck and delivery of emulsion district-wide to assist in patching operations. Operates small engine equipment such as chain saws, weed eaters, and post drivers, as needed. Performs duties using manual labor in maintenance operations. Performs a variety of task for the Sign Crew related to maintenance operations, including, but not limited to, weed eating around signs, clearing trees, limbs, and other vegetations from the right-of-way, repairing, replacing, and installing signs, sign posts, and sign anchors, erecting and maintaining detour signage, barricades, and traffic control devices, removing and disposing of litter and dead animals from the road right-of-way, delivering tack emulsion to counties within the district, and installing and maining permanent and temporary pavement markings, Assists other maintenance crews, as needed, with other maintenance operations to complete routine maintenance work and maintenance plans. Assists in tracking and recording daily work performed, including specific accomplishments, work locations, equipment utilization, and quantity of materials used. Assists with updating and maintaining the sign inventory database for the county. Assists in placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide. Assists in flagging traffic in work zones during roadway repairs and ditching operations to control the flow of traffic to protect workers, the general public, and equipment. Conducts daily preventative maintenance activities on all assigned equipment and vehicles to ensure that equipment is greased and lubricated, proper coolant and oil (engine and hydraulic) levels are maintained, hoses and belts are inspected for deterioration, tires are properly inflated, and no leakages are present. Conducts safety inspections on all assigned vehicle equipment. Monitors the preventative maintenance program of equipment to ensure a routine maintenance schedule is followed and monitors equipment use and wear to prolong equipment life. Assists in collecting data and conducting night inspections of pavement markings and sign retro-reflectivity throughout the county. Enters deficiencies in the work request module in Highway Maintenance Management System (HMMS). Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended 12-hour shifts. Operates both anti-icing and removal equipment (snow plows and sand and salt spreaders) during snow and ice response on highways and bridges. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
