Job Responsibilities

Acts as Unit Training Coordinator. Responsible for monthly safety meetings and the employee orientation program. Conducts or schedules all training sessions for unit employees in such matters as Bloodborne Pathogens, Chainsaw, Confined pace, CPR, PPE, Excavation, Fire Extinguishers, First Aid, Forklift, Lockout/Tagout, Flagging, Work Zone Safety, Hazardous Communications, Spill Prevention and Control, and other Safety and Environmental Measures training in accordance with Department Policies and the Employee Safety Manual.

Inspects maintenance facilities for compliance with OSHA regulations and Department guidelines on a routine schedule in accordance with Agency policy. Ensure Maintenance operations are in compliance with DHEC, OSHA and SCDOT rules and regulations.

Acts as Unit Environmental Control Coordinator. Serves as Spill Coordinator and member of the SPCC and SWIPP Teams. Responsible for performing inspections, conducting training, maintaining records, and submitting necessary reports and other paperwork in a timely and professional manner. Coordinates the storage and disposal of all used and hazardous waste. Monitors and promotes the unit recycling program. Coordinates with DHEC, EPA, and other inspectors and follows up on actual clean-up projects. Performs routine inspections and site evaluations. Documents findings and makes detailed recommendations to appropriate supervision.

Reviews various maintenance activities for compliance with OSHA and Department safety procedures and makes recommendations to Resident Maintenance Engineers and crew supervisors.

Investigates workers compensation claims. Coordinates First Report of Injury. Investigates all accident and damage claims. Maintains all required OSHA and Department paperwork including OSHA logs, vehicle accident report, damage claims and other related items.

Coordinate Hazard Communication Programs. Responsible for maintaining all Safety Data Sheets in accordance with Department and OSHA policies.

Maintains all necessary documents and records in accordance with Department policies related to training, environmental, and safety.

Inspects all fire extinguishers on a monthly basis and coordinates a comprehensive inspection performed by a third party on an annual schedule.

Utilize data from First Reports of Injury, Vehicle and Equipment Accident Report Form, and the Risk Management Database to develop, implement, and evaluate Occupational Safety and Health Programs.

Assists with emergency and inclement weather operations, may include extended hours and / or 12-hour shifts.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

A high school diploma and two (2) years of experience in occupational safety or industrial hygiene programs. A bachelor's degree in public health or a related field may substitute for the required work experience.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. This position requires working in an office environment, warehouse environment, and/or outside in all weather conditions. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Requires travel as needed, and assigned.
