Job Responsibilities

This position is in the Strategic Communication Unit, Chief of Staff, at SCDMV Headquarters in Blythewood, SC.

Responsibilities Of The Public Information Coordinator

  • Responsible for the planning, designing, and editing content of agency internet and social media sites while making recommendations to improve the agency’s overall digital communications strategy. Supports Stratcom and other department’s audio/video projects with production and editing skills. Creates illustrations to advance agency communications on multiple platforms including but not limited to social media. Measures and reports interaction levels to assess the effectiveness of agency communications and makes recommendations to improve effectiveness and reach. Monitors customer feedback including but not limited to: questions, reviews, and comments on social media, garnering information from agency stakeholders and others to post appropriate replies in a timely, accurate, and professional manner. Alerts SCDMV management of customer feedback as directed by supervisor.
  • Assists the Public Information Director with all SCDMV community service projects (Ex: United Way campaign and blood drives). Promotes, tracks/ monitors, follows up, and reports on all community projects. Develops and revises agency forms, publications, and other materials as required, including but not limited to design and editing of publications. Develops and administers promotional and informational programs and communication designed to promote and explain agency initiatives, including but not limited to goals, activities, and objectives.
  • Coordinates, researches, and promotes agency public relations and public information activities and programs, including reviewing and updating content on the agency’s website as needed. Develops and disseminates articles, feature stories, and other promotional materials for release to media, SCDMV stakeholders and the public. Assists the Public Information Director as the second in command for media contact and maintains contact with newspapers, radio, television stations, and other mass media services to disseminate informational materials for public interest or as required by management.
  • Serves as the agency coordinator for shooting, editing, and distribution of photos for informational materials, events, television clips and social media. Works closely with other SCDMV departments to support their initiatives as directed by supervisor.
  • Other duties as may be required by manager.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum and Additional Requirements

  • A high school diploma and relevant experience. An associate degree or a bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required work experience.

Agency Requirements

  • Must complete a nationwide criminal background check to include finger printing.

Additional Requirements:

  • Knowledge of journalistic principles, practices and techniques of disseminating information to the public through a variety of media.
  • Knowledge of grammar, composition, and style.
  • Ability to plan, compose, edit, and produce both internal and external publications.
  • Ability to gather, organize, and present oral and written information in a clear, concise, and accurate manner.
  • Ability to regularly take photographs of agency events.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign suggested.
  • Under minimal supervision, employee takes initiative and exercises sound judgement and discretion.
  • Professional level involving complex programs, projects, and communications.
  • Works closely with a variety of SCDMV departments to recommend communication methods such as graphics, newsletters, or brochures.
  • Partners with departments when creating communication materials.
  • Normal work week will consist of 37.5 hours.
  • Limited extended hours may be required to meet job requirements.
  • Works in a climate-controlled office setting.
  • Limited in-state travel may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

Agency Preferred

  • A bachelor's degree and experience related to the development and dissemination of informational material using a variety of media and channels.
  • Experience in using social media for marketing purposes.
  • Experience in community outreach efforts.
  • Experience in using a content management system for public website content. An equivalent education and relevant experience may be accepted with prior approval.
