Job Purpose

Under general supervision, the transportation officer exercises safety and security measures at the facility. This position is responsible for providing transportation of youth to and from appointments i.e., medical, dental, and court appearances. This position is responsible for ensuring the custody, control, and supervision of youth during transport while adhering to all applicable laws, policies, procedures, and security protocols. Also, observes and reports unusual activities and provides school security assistance as needed.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provides secure transportation of youth between secure facilities, courts, medical appointments, and other authorized locations while maintaining safety, supervision, and compliance with agency policies.
  • Follows agency policies related to youth supervision, security protocols, documentation, use of restraints and event reporting.
  • Completes accurate and timely documentation related to transports, incidents, vehicle use and youth transfers.
  • Provides transport services across the state to support multiple youth secure facilities, responding to operational needs and priorities.
  • Maintains availability during assigned on-call periods to respond to urgent transport needs, including after-hours or emergency situations.
  • Ensures transport vehicles and security equipment are inspected, maintained, and used appropriately to support safe transportation.
  • Performs other related duties and tasks as assigned by a supervisor to further support the agency's mission and values.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

STATE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A high school diploma.

Additional Requirements

  • Knowledge of state laws/ instructional rules/regulations/guidelines for custody, control and supervision of youth.
  • Knowledge of SC Child Abuse statues.
  • Knowledge of purpose/methods/practices of secure facilities.
  • Knowledge of various methods of instructing/handling/supervising youth in various activities.
  • Ability to pass a competency examination SCDJJ Policies and Procedures and Instructional guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to meet and maintain certification under the SC Law Enforcement Training Act.

Essential Position: Must perform restraints on youth without restrictions. Work in locked quarters, be able to bend over, lift 50 Ibs., must be mobile, no sedentary duties, must be able to work around youth without restrictions.

This position performs job related to custody, control, transportation or recapture of youth within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice. and the employee may have direct and indirect contact with youth within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice. Training applicable to these duties will be provided.

Preferred Qualifications

PREFERRED AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:

Must be 21 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED and must have valid driver’s license. Must be an Officer in compliance with and certified under Continue Law Enforcement Education (Clee) within six (6) months employment and must successfully pass all required exams and performance assessments.

Mandatory six (6) months’ security experience in a correctional or detention facility.
