Mission

It is the mission of the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) to impact and transform young lives, strengthen families, and support safer communities through targeted prevention and rehabilitation.

Job Purpose

Under limited supervision, assists the Superintendent with all administrative and instructional activities and programs within SCDJJ school district and any school affiliated satellite programs in accordance with State Department of Education regulations and DJJ Policies and Procedures.

Job Responsibilities

Assists superintendent in providing vision and instructional leadership for the school and local school-affiliated satellite programs to foster success for all students and educational staff. This includes direct evaluation and supervision of staff members assigned to the principal.

Provides leadership for school staff in the development, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive educational program that is administered in accordance with all applicable laws and agency policies, administrative rules, and regulations.

Regularly seeks new and improved methodologies, policies and procedures for enhancing the effectiveness of department and District. Employs imagination and creativity in the application of duties and responsibilities.

Ensures effective and relevant staff development activities are met.

Plans and implements personal professional growth activities.

Models, encourages and supports integrity, fairness, and ethical behavior among staff and students.

Provides a work environment which encourages clear and open communications.

Has a clear and comprehensive understanding of the principles of effective leadership and how such principles are to be applied.

Personally, directs the development and training of department personnel by ensuring that they are properly inducted, oriented, and trained.

Monitors accurate, current and timely dissemination of student’s records in collaboration with the Guidance Department, Department of Education, State and Federal Laws.

Performs other duties and projects as assigned that supports the mission of the agency.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

STATE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Must hold a valid secondary administration certificate acquired through acquisition of a degree from an accredited college/university.

Must hold a current/valid SC Department of Education certificate in Secondary School Administration.

Additional Requirements

Knowledge of SC Department of Education regulations and DJJ policies and procedures pertaining to school administration and operations.

Skilled in the use of modern educational equipment and technologies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and juveniles.

Ability to collaborate with other school administrators and district office staff on a regular basis.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and writing.

Limited overnight travel.

This position performs job duties relating to the custody, control, transportation, or recapture of youth within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice, and the employee may have direct and indirect contact with youth within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice. Training applicable to these duties will be provided.
