Position Description

Job Title: Multilingual Liaison

Reports to: Director of Equity, Belonging & Family Engagement

Summary:  Assists assigned students and their families in navigating District educational services and accessing community resources by providing cultural and linguistic support. Serves as a translator, advocate,and advisor to students and their families. Promotes learning and understanding of varied cultures among students, staff, and the greater educational community in an effort to bridge linguistic and cultural differences.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Other duties as  assigned.)

1. Assists with translation and interpretation services for students and their families.

1. Attends parent-teacher conferences and other school meetings.
2. Assists with crisis interventions, as needed.
3. Translates and/or interprets all forms of communication, including but not limited to: notifications, report cards, forms, memos and letters. 
4. Connecting students and families with needed resources and serves as a liaison and addresses barriers as needed.
5. Facilities access to summer programming, co-curricular activities, mentoring programs, and like services.
6. Coordinates, consults, and facilitates interactions with District personnel, post-secondary education agents or employment representatives.
7. Provides tutoring, as needed, with English language learning and academic learning.

1. Provides cultural support to students and their families.
1. Participates in home visits in support of student’s and their family’s transition to the school and community.
2. Helps to assimilate to American culture, social norms and appropriate language use.
3. Educates students and the greater community about their assigned students’ culture, customs, language and social norms.
4. Employs cross cultural skills and strategies of problem solving, consensus building, conflict resolution, de-escalation, mediation, negotiation and crisis management.
2. Using data to identify and address student needs and collaboration opportunities.
3. Attending conferences and workshops with teachers and administrators in order to stay current and to develop a shared understanding of curriculum, instruction, and assessment in the area of flexible pathways.
4. Performs other related duties as assigned.

General Responsibilities: Assists in establishing and maintaining a school-based multilingual liaison program and advancing a positive learning environment for all participants.  Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule. Commitment to responsibilities on weekends and evening hours as required/requested.  

Education and/or Experience: High School diploma or equivalent. General working knowledge of education system and knowledge of District protocols and processes. 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid Vermont Driver’s license and acceptable driving record to enable travel to assigned student’s home, appointments and activities as needed.

Other Skills and Abilities:  Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements, applicable laws, and Board policies. Highly organized and attentive to detail.  Culturally aware and sensitive to varied social norms and expectations.  Demonstrated ongoing commitment to workplace diversity, sustainability, and delivering exceptional customer service.
