Position Summary

The High School Social Studies Teacher is responsible for providing rigorous, engaging, and culturally responsive instruction. The teacher will develop and deliver standards-aligned instruction in social studies courses, assess student learning, provide individualized support, and contribute to a positive and inclusive school environment.

The ideal candidate demonstrates strong classroom management skills, high expectations for all students, effective instructional practices, and a commitment to student achievement and college and career readiness.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver engaging, standards-aligned social studies instruction for high school students.
  • Teach courses such as U.S. History, Global History, Government, Economics, Civics, or other social studies courses as assigned.
  • Develop daily and long-term lesson plans aligned with New York State learning standards and school curriculum requirements.
  • Use a variety of instructional strategies to address different learning styles, abilities, and academic needs.
  • Establish and maintain a positive, structured, and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Maintain high academic and behavioral expectations for all students.
  • Incorporate primary and secondary sources, historical documents, current events, technology, research, and project-based learning into instruction.
  • Teach students to analyze evidence, evaluate sources, think critically, conduct research, and communicate effectively.
  • Administer assessments and use student data to monitor progress and adjust instruction.
  • Provide timely, meaningful, and constructive feedback to students.
  • Provide appropriate interventions, differentiation, and additional academic support to students who require assistance.
  • Maintain accurate records of grades, attendance, assignments, assessments, and student progress.
  • Communicate regularly and professionally with parents and guardians regarding student achievement, progress, and concerns.
  • Participate in department meetings, grade-level meetings, professional development, faculty meetings, and school events.
  • Support school-wide initiatives designed to improve student achievement, attendance, engagement, and school culture.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and comply with all school policies, procedures, and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the administration.

Classroom Management

  • Establish clear classroom routines, procedures, and expectations.
  • Maintain an orderly, respectful, and productive learning environment.
  • Address student behavior consistently and in accordance with school policies.
  • Document and communicate significant behavioral or academic concerns.
  • Build positive relationships with students while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Utilize restorative and/or positive behavior strategies when appropriate.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bilingual Spanish Preferred
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • New York State Social Studies teaching certification appropriate to the grade level, or eligibility for certification.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of social studies content and effective instructional practices.
  • Strong classroom management and communication skills.

Preferred:

  • Master's degree (preferred) in Education, Social Studies, History, or a related field.
  • Prior experience teaching at the high school level.
  • Experience teaching New York State Regents-level courses.
  • Experience working in a diverse, urban, or charter school environment.
  • Familiarity with data-driven instruction and differentiated learning.
  • Experience incorporating technology and project-based learning into instruction.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of U.S. and world history, civics, government, economics, and related social studies disciplines.
  • Ability to create rigorous and engaging lessons.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to analyze student data and use it to inform instruction.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction for students with varying academic abilities.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Proficiency with educational technology and learning management systems.

Pay: $65,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
