Location: On-site Morrisville, North Carolina (Research Triangle Area)
Travel: Occasional domestic and international travel may be required
Annual Salary: $150000.00
Position Overview
We are seeking a highly proficient Hardware Design Engineer to join an innovative, close-knit product development team focused on next-generation Raman spectroscopy and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) solutions.
This role will contribute to the development of new PCBAs supporting electro-optical sensors, lasers, batteries, and other components commonly used in benchtop and handheld spectroscopic instruments. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in mixed-signal hardware design, PCB development, board bring-up, and collaboration across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
This is a fast-paced development environment offering exposure to advanced technologies in spectroscopy, optics, healthcare, environmental monitoring, food safety, security, and materials science.
Key Responsibilities
Hardware Design & Development
* Design and maintain PCB schematics using Altium or comparable PCB design tools
* Generate manufacturing-ready design packages and documentation
* Develop low-power electronic designs for battery-powered mobile products
* Design circuits integrating:
* Microcontrollers
* FPGAs
* CCD and CMOS image sensors
* Low-noise analog front ends
* Power supplies
* Mixed-signal communication interfaces
* Battery controllers
* Laser diode drivers
Validation & Testing
* Use SPICE and related simulation tools to validate circuit performance prior to fabrication
* Lead bring-up activities for new boards, including power and timing validation
* Analyze signal timing and waveforms using oscilloscopes, network analyzers, and other laboratory instrumentation
* Support EMC, emissions, and electrical safety testing, including:
* IEC 61326
* IEC 61010
* FCC Part 15/18 standards
Cross-Functional Collaboration
* Partner with firmware and FPGA engineers on:
* Pin assignments
* Interface definitions
* Memory component selection
* Communication architectures
* Work closely with PCB layout engineers on component placement and routing reviews
* Lead multidisciplinary design reviews focused on:
* Grounding
* Interference mitigation
* Cable harnessing
* Electro-mechanical integration
* Support manufacturing teams in troubleshooting electrical issues during production and customer RMAs
Additional Responsibilities
* Recommend components and connectors based on operational and product requirements
* Assist with board inspection, soldering, and hardware rework activities as needed
* Contribute to broader engineering and product development initiatives
* Maintain a collaborative, solutions-oriented mindset in a dynamic development environment
Required Qualifications
* Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related discipline
* Minimum 5 years of experience using Altium or comparable PCB design software
* Strong background in digital and mixed-signal circuit design
* Hands-on experience with oscilloscopes, network analyzers, and laboratory debugging tools
* Experience with revision control systems such as Git, BitBucket, or Allspice
* Strong written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
* Experience with soldering, board inspection, and hardware rework
* Familiarity with firmware development or scripting tools such as Python
* Exposure to spectroscopy, optics, imaging systems, or scientific instrumentation environments
