Job Description


As our Business Manager, you will play a pivotal role in driving the day-to-day operations of our firm. You will be responsible for overseeing diverse aspects of the business, including financial management, human resources, and administrative support, with the opportunity to take on marketing coordination based on interest and capability. This position offers excellent flexibility for the right candidate, with scheduling options ranging from 20 to 40 hours per week based on candidate preference.

Soundscape Engineering is an established, specialized engineering consulting firm providing acoustics, noise control, and vibration isolation design services for buildings, environmental assessments, and industrial facilities. Founded in 2010 and based in Plymouth, Michigan, we pride ourselves on delivering technical excellence and high-value solutions to the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industries.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Financial & Bookkeeping: Manage full-charge bookkeeping functions, process payroll, and oversee employee benefits administration.
  • Accounts Receivable: Receive, process, and deposit client payments; maintain proactive, professional communication with client accounting departments to ensure timely collection of invoices.
  • Financial Analysis: Prepare financial forecasting and cash flow projections to support leadership decisions.
  • Project Administration: Establish and maintain new client profiles and project files within the company’s financial and document management systems.
  • Risk Management: Coordinate with the company’s insurance agent to facilitate client COI (Certificate of Insurance) requests and assist with annual policy renewals.
  • Executive & Office Support: Provide administrative assistance to company Principals, manage general office operations, and coordinate professional travel arrangements.
  • Compliance: Obtain and maintain required local, State, and Federal government business certifications and registrations.
  • Deliverables Support: Assist with professional report editing, document formatting, and presentation preparation.


Optional Responsibilities (Depending on interest and capabilities):

  • Produce and maintain company marketing literature and collateral.
  • Coordinate targeted marketing efforts and interface with AEC industry marketing professionals.
  • Field initial project inquiry calls and assist leadership with writing formal proposals.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Proven full-charge bookkeeping experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfortable, professional, and confident handling phone inquiries.
  • Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities in a small-business setting.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or a related field (AACSB accreditation preferred); an equivalent combination of education and professional experience will also be considered.
  • 4 years of experience as a business manager, bookkeeper, or in a closely related operational role.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen. Position requires the ability to successfully pass a comprehensive federal background investigation and eligibility screening to access Sensitive/Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI).
  • Ability to reliably commute to our downtown Plymouth, MI office for on-site operations.
  • Comfort working in a collaborative, open-plan office environment alongside engineering and management staff.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency with QuickBooks Online.
  • Prior experience working within the Architecture, Engineering, or Construction (AEC) industry.
  • Advanced user skills in Microsoft Word (specifically template styling and document formatting).
  • A personal interest in sound, architecture, music, or building design.


Physical & Language Demands

  • Ability to remain at a workstation and operate a computer, phone, and standard office equipment for extended periods, with occasional lifting of files or office supplies up to 20 lbs.
  • Frequent verbal and written communication in English with employees, clients, and vendors. Must be able to accurately exchange information in these scenarios.


Compensation & Benefits

  • Pay Range: $28.00 – $35.00 per hour (commensurate with experience).
  • Schedule: Flexible 20 to 40 hours per week based on candidate preference.
  • Health & Wellness Benefits:

20 hours/week: Access to choose from several company-sponsored health insurance plans.

30 hours/week: Soundscape contributes up to $350 per month toward the cost of your selected company health insurance plan.

  • Retirement: SIMPLE IRA retirement plan with a company matching contribution of up to 3% of your annual compensation.
  • Paid Time Off (PTO):

Paid Vacation: Accrued hourly, with the accrual rate increasing based on years of employment.

Paid Sick & Personal Leave: Dedicated paid time off for illness, bereavement, and family needs.

Paid Holidays: 8 paid holidays per year, including 5 fixed holidays (New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving) plus 3 flexible holidays to use at your discretion.
