SUMMARY:

Souder, Miller & Associates is hiring a full-time Survey Tech VIII (Senior Survey Technician) for the Farmington, New Mexico, office. The Senior Survey Technician will assist the Project Manager with daily surveying tasks and project management in the field and/or office. The Senior Survey Technician is responsible for leading and performing advanced field survey assignments, including boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, construction staking, utility, control, and related survey work. This position provides technical expertise in the use of survey equipment, data collection, field calculations, plan interpretation, construction layout, and survey data management. The Senior Survey Technician works closely with licensed surveyors, project managers, engineers, drafters, crew members, clients, and contractors to ensure accurate, timely, and high-quality survey deliverables. This role requires strong field judgment, attention to detail, safety awareness, effective communication, and the ability to coordinate survey activities in a fast-paced project environment. New and varied assignments may be made frequently, requiring flexibility in travel, self-directed learning skills, and heightened social interaction. Field assignments can be frequent, and duration can extend beyond one week.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead, coordinate, and perform field survey activities for boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, construction staking, utility, and control surveys.
  • Operate, set up, troubleshoot, and maintain survey equipment including RTK/GPS, robotic total stations, total stations, controllers/data collectors, automatic levels, and related field instrumentation.
  • Perform routine calibration checks and ensure survey equipment is properly maintained, secured, and ready for field use.
  • Use Trimble and related survey technology, including robotic total stations, Trimble data collectors, and Trimble GPS equipment, to collect, process, and lay out survey data accurately.
  • Perform control initialization, GPS observations, OPUS processing, centerline and offset staking, curve staking, intersection layout, radial stakeout, and basic field error analysis.
  • Review plans, specifications, plats, legal descriptions, and construction documents to determine survey requirements and prepare for field assignments.
  • Calculate centerlines, stationing, horizontal and vertical curve data, utility locations, curb and gutter, curb returns, grades, offsets, and other layout information for field staking.
  • Perform construction staking activities including slope staking, utility offsets, roadway staking, site improvements, commercial lots, and related construction layout tasks.
  • Transmit, download, upload, and organize survey data in designated computer network locations and project folders; obtain and prepare data needed for field use.
  • Send field data, notes, and project information to the office from remote locations using available technology and company procedures.
  • Prepare clear and accurate written field notes, daily records, sketches, cut sheets, and documentation for survey and staking projects.
  • Maintain organized project files and ensure survey records, field data, and supporting documents are complete, accurate, and stored properly.
  • Provide guidance and technical direction to survey crew members, drafters, and junior staff as needed to support project completion.
  • Communicate and collaborate with project managers, engineers, survey staff, clients, contractors, and other project team members regarding field conditions, schedules, and project requirements.
  • Follow company survey standards, quality control procedures, and safety practices while working in the field and office.
  • Travel to project sites as required, including remote locations and overnight assignments when necessary.
  • Prepares neat written field notes and daily records. Maintains cut sheets for staking projects.
  • Knowledge of survey safety and standard practices, per the SMA Survey Manual.

Travel up to 25%.

Job Requirements
  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • Bachelor's or Associate's degree preferred.
  • Minimum fifteen years of experience in the surveying industry.
  • Certified Surveyor Technician or equivalent certification preferred.
  • Valid driver's license and able to pass the drug test requirements.
