Ophthalmic Assistant
Assist doctors by managing the daily schedule and patient flow, preparing patients for their exam and treatment by taking and recording medical history and performing basic visual measurement tests such as visual acuities and intraocular pressures.
Perform patient pretesting such as visual field testing, corneal thickness measurement, corneal topography, retinal nerve fiber layer measurement, retinal thickness and topography, retinal photography, OCT's, B-scan ultrasonography, etc.
Set up and assist various procedures such as eye lid excision, foreign body removal, in- office laser treatments, etc.
Instruct patients on home medication and administer medications as directed by physicians. Send refill authorizations to pharmacy by e-Rx as well as phone or fax. Process all pharmacy prior authorizations. Instruct patients on insertion, removal, and care of contact lenses.
Clean and stock exam rooms. Prepare instruments for sterilization in autoclave. Maintain ophthalmic equipment and instruments, inventories, and process supply orders.
Return patient phone calls and answer patient questions when applicable.
Assist with appointment making, insurance verification, and other duties as necessary, including surgery paperwork.
Must be able to: read, write, and communicate clearly and professionally; use computer and software programs necessary to the position; troubleshoot and calibrate patient care equipment; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; think critically; work independently with minimal supervision; problem solve; organize and prioritize workload; manage multiple assignments effectively; attention to detail; function well in a team environment.
