Adopted: 6/20/01 SOQUEL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT Job Description TITLE: Library Specialist DESCRIPTION: Under general direction perform a variety of technical and clerical duties involving circulation, reference and record keeping activities within a school library and act as a prime resource person regarding materials available. Receive supervision from the school administrator within a framework of standard policies and procedures; train, coordinate and supervise the work of students and/or volunteer aides; responsible for the day-to-day operation of a library; requires a variety of specialized, technical and organizational skills, as well as creativity and initiative. REPORTS TO: Principal EVALUATED BY: Principal MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY: Prepare displays, learning centers and instructional packets. Monitor students as they use computers. Assist in the selection, ordering and processing of new books and supplies including computer software for the library or prescribed instructional program. Organize and maintain the routine operation of a school site library facility. Assist students and faculty in the use of library facilities and practices; collect fines; provide notification and follow up on overdue materials. Check library materials (including audio-visual equipment and other instructional resources) in and out (circulation), inspect incoming materials for damage, need for mending, etc.; mend books and magazines; send out for binding as necessary. Process books, magazines, computer software and other materials into and out of the collection including assigning correct Dewey Decimal classification, stamping school identification and writing copy number; paste pockets and insert charge cards. Maintain records and prepare reports regarding circulation, attendance, monies collected and lost materials. Supervise students using the library, maintaining discipline as necessary. Answer questions on basic reference materials and library procedures, directing users to appropriate areas for retrieval of needed materials. Research requests from teachers, students and staff; fill teacher requests for library materials; confer with teachers in the development of learning packets and acquisition of new materials. Perform inventory of collection, reporting lost and damaged materials and recommending withdrawals from and additions to the collection. Promote the use of the library through displays, bulletins and/or other means. Maintain audio-visual files, verifying return of all items, notifying responsible individuals in the event of missing items and reordering replaceable items where necessary. Assist in the operation of a variety of audio-visual equipment and computers. Type letters, reports, invoice requisitions from copy, draft and machine recordings. Schedule and conduct orientation sessions and class tours through the library. Train and supervise student assistants and volunteers in proper library methods and techniques including computer skills. Supervise and evaluate student helpers working in the library. File catalogue cards according to the American Library Association rules for cataloging and filing; shelve books and assist in the maintenance of the library. Serve as an information source to students, parents, teachers and other district personnel regarding books, reading lists, new publications, etc. Implement and coordinate special programs in the library; attend meetings and workshops related to school libraries. Maintain regular attendance. Work cooperatively with others. Perform other related duties as assigned. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS: Training and Experience: Any combination of training and experience, which would indicate possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities listed herein. Completion of the twelfth grade or the equivalent of a high school education and a minimum of one year of library experience preferably in an educational setting or equivalent to the completion of an Associate of Arts degree or certificate in library media technology. Knowledge: Knowledge of the basic purpose, organization and operation of a school library; modern office procedures and practices; English usage, punctuation, spelling and grammar; American Library Association rules for cataloging and filing; basic microcomputer operation and principles of evaluating software. Abilities: Ability to perform clerical work using independent judgment; conduct and/or direct library research using card catalogues, dictionaries, encyclopedias and related reference materials; communicate effectively in both oral and written form; learn standard library terminology and methods including the Dewey Decimal System; use standard office and library equipment; type accurately from clear copy; operate computer and audio-visual equipment; plan and organize library activities and programs; perform mathematical calculations; establish and maintain a variety of records and filing systems; prepare routine reports and correspondence; establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties. Physical Effort/Work Environment: Moderate physical effort which may include frequent standing, walking, lifting and occasional climbing or stooping; use of medium weight tools and materials. Mostly indoors work environment. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: A pre-placement physical examination may be required. Possession of a valid California driver’s license and automobile insurance coverage that conforms to California state law. Possession of a valid First Aid Certificate. Evidence of a negative TB test every four years. Passing of a pre-employment basic skills test. SALARY RANGE: Range 21 on the Classified Unit Salary Schedule
