This role leads tax staff, manages state and local tax audits, conducts complex tax research, and collaborates with cross-functional teams to optimize compliance processes and system automation.
Key Responsibilities
- Tax Compliance & Reporting: Direct the preparation, review, and submission of recurring sales and use tax filings; validate purchase and sales transactions for proper tax treatment; maintain exemption certificate records.
- Audit Management & Research: Lead state and local tax audits, serving as the primary liaison for auditor inquiries; research state/local tax law changes and report operational impacts to leadership.
- Systems & Process Improvement: Partner with IT and Finance to support tax engine integrations (e.g., Vertex, Avalara, OneSource) and ERP systems; identify workflow automation opportunities and document internal controls.
- Accounting & Team Leadership: Manage tax accruals, account reconciliations, and month-end close activities for indirect taxes; supervise, train, and evaluate junior tax staff.
- Experience: 5–8 years of progressive sales and use tax experience with a strong foundation in multistate regulations; 2 years of supervisory or team leadership experience.
- Technical Systems: Proficiency with enterprise ERP platforms (e.g., SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics) and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Skills: Proven ability to manage multi-jurisdictional tax audits, handle complex problem-solving, and meet tight compliance deadlines.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or a related field.
- CPA, CMI (Certified Member of the Institute), or MST designation.
- Practical experience with third-party tax automation software (Vertex, Avalara, OneSource).
- Industry experience in corporate environments such as retail, manufacturing, distribution, or e-commerce.
