Job Description

Purpose of position: To screen, assess and identify students with communication disorders that adversely affect their educational progress; to develop and provide direct and indirect services within the educational setting, based on established IEP goals and objectives; to develop treatment plans and provide direction to paraeducators, parents and teachers. Primary Responsibilities: Screening, Testing, Diagnosing, Advising:

● Assesses student communication skills (e.g., articulation, fluency, voice, expressive and receptive language, pragmatics etc.) for the purpose of identifying communication disorders, determining program eligibility, and developing recommendations for treatment.

● Administers formal and informal (on-going and curriculum based) assessments, observing students in educational environments and selecting appropriate assessments based on individual student needs.

● Obtains additional diagnostic information from appropriate persons and available records (case history, parent interview, etc).

● Analyzes and interprets information, writes reports, and makes recommendations regarding the need for Speech-Language services.

● Participates in collaborative team discussions and clearly communicate observations, informal data results, formal assessment results, and recommendations.

● Supervises undergraduate interns, paraprofessionals, volunteers, and other professions (as appropriate).

Planning and Oversight:

● Collaborates with a variety of groups and/or individuals (e.g., parents, educators, physicians, administrators, maintenance personnel, team members, other professions/programs) to resolve issues and to provide services in compliance with established state and federal laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.

● Coordinates meetings and assessment sessions for eligible students (e.g., testing, screening, IEPs, conferences with parents as appropriate).

● Meets with related school personnel to coordinate specific objectives for IEPs.

● Develops individualized interventions and other educational programs necessary to support identified needs.

● Schedules interventions using a variety of service models including classroom intervention, consultation/collaboration, and pull-out as appropriate to meet students' needs in the least restrictive environment.

Managing and Conducting Therapy:

● Provides speech and language therapy to identified students.

● Instructs and supports students and staff in the use of communication technologies (e.g., augmentative and alternative communication devices, etc.).

● Plans evidence based interventions appropriate for individual students and groups of students.

● Uses evidence based methods and techniques appropriate to stated objectives.

● Supervises implementation of treatment plans with support staff (e.g., SLPA, instructional aides, etc.).

● Manages the facilities, materials, and equipment, necessary to the delivery of services. Adhering to Local, State, and Federal regulations and ethical practices:

● Maintains files and records (e.g., progress reports, activity logs, IEP documents, screening results, and Medicaid billing information) and prepares periodic reports to assure compliance and reimbursement.

● Engages in continuing education and professional growth activities related to speech/language pathology.

Qualifications:

● Possess a valid California credential (Clinical/Rehabilitative Services Credential or Speech-Language Pathology Service Credential) authorizing instruction in speech and language therapy or an out of state credential authorizing instruction in speech and language therapy.

● Master's Degree in communicative disorders from an accredited university

● Valid license from the CA Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers. Skills, Abilities and Knowledge:

● Ability to establish rapport and work constructively with staff, students, parents, and community members.

● Maintain up to date CPR and first aid certification.

● Integrate evidence based practices and research findings into services and/or specially designed instruction.

● Communicate effectively in writing for a variety of purposes including but not limited to: letters to parents, reports, staff and administration.
