What are the responsibilities and job description for the Family Law Associate Attorney position at Solutions Law Iowa PLC?
The role
We are looking for an attorney who can combine genuine compassion for clients with disciplined ownership of the work. This attorney will primarily handle Iowa family-law matters and, after onboarding, should be prepared to move routine cases forward without waiting for every next step to be assigned.
Our clients are often navigating the most stressful period of their lives. They need an attorney who listens, explains, and treats them with dignity. They also need an attorney who makes decisions, meets deadlines, communicates promptly, prepares thoroughly, and follows through. We believe excellent client service requires both.
This is a strong fit for someone who wants meaningful responsibility and room to grow - not someone who needs perfect systems, constant prompting, or a manager to monitor whether the work is moving.
What you will own
· Manage Iowa divorce, custody, modification, contempt, and related family-law matters from onboarding through resolution.
· Develop case strategy; draft pleadings, motions, discovery, and settlement documents; and prepare for negotiations, mediation, hearings, and trial.
· Keep clients informed with clear, timely, and appropriately direct communication.
· Maintain control of your deadlines, calendar, task list, and case priorities.
· Delegate effectively to and collaborate with your assigned legal assistant while retaining attorney-level responsibility for the file.
· Record time accurately and contemporaneously, manage your workload, and meet the firm’s billing and revenue expectations.
· Identify stalled work, insufficient workload, uncertainty, or workflow problems early—and take action or ask for help before the issue becomes a missed deadline or missed goal.
· Contribute practical ideas that improve the way our team serves clients and completes work.
What we are looking for
· Active Iowa law license in good standing.
· Prior family-law or litigation experience is strongly preferred. This position is best suited to an attorney ready to handle routine family-law matters with limited day-to-day supervision after a reasonable onboarding period.
· Sound judgment and the confidence to make a recommendation, take the next appropriate step, and ask a focused question when guidance is needed.
· Strong legal writing, courtroom preparation, negotiation, and client-communication skills.
· A demonstrated habit of organization, follow-through, and personal accountability.
· Comfort working with clients experiencing conflict, stress, trauma, or financial pressure without losing professional boundaries or forward momentum.
· Respect for cultural differences and a commitment to serving a diverse client base. Spanish fluency is valuable but not required.
You will probably thrive here if you...
· like knowing what result you are responsible for and being trusted to get there;
· take initiative when work is unclear, blocked, or not moving as expected;
· use systems and support staff well without becoming dependent on a flawless workflow;
· care about both the quality of your work and the measurable results expected of your role;
· can receive direct feedback, adjust, and continue moving forward; and
· want to build real expertise, contribute ideas, and become increasingly valuable to the clients and team around you.
What success looks like
Within the first several months, the successful attorney will be progressively assuming a family-law caseload, maintaining dependable control of deadlines and client communication, producing strong work with decreasing supervision, collaborating effectively with support staff, and consistently meeting the performance expectations established for the role.
Schedule, support, and compensation
· Full-time professional role, generally 40 hours per week.
· Flexible scheduling within Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m., based on client, court, and team obligations.
· In-person onboarding followed by a minimum of two in-office days per week once approved for hybrid work.
· Salary of $90,000-$115,000, depending on relevant experience and Spanish-language fluency.
· Annual performance bonus tied to collected revenue above an established threshold.
· Flexible PTO and autonomy, paired with clear expectations and accountability.
· An assigned legal assistant, collaborative attorney team, established case-management systems, and access to guidance when it is needed.
· Opportunity for increasing autonomy, responsibility, and professional growth.
· Less-experienced candidates with strong litigation potential may be considered under the firm’s junior-associate compensation structure.
