POSITION: Fleet Mechanic

POSITION TYPE: Classified - Vehicle Maintenance - Grade II

QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or equivalent.

A Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B, with the Passenger Endorsement.

ASE Mechanics Certification or Similar. Candidate must agree to get ASE Diesel Certification within 6 months of hire.

Obtain a Bureau of Underground Storage Tank Regulations (BUSTR), Class C, Operator Certification.

Shall be experienced and excel in mechanical and technical aptitude and have extensive gasoline, diesel, and heavy vehicle maintenance knowledge.

Shall have demonstrated success in performing a wide variety of tasks requiring and understanding school bus mechanical service and repairs.

Shall direct and receive written and verbal communications, directions, and instructions.

Shall understand and comprehend the reading and interpretations of mechanical and technical automotive and school bus documents and specifications.

Shall have the ability to diagnose, analyze and solve problems.

Shall exhibit acceptable standards of emotional stability, moral character, sound health and be physically able to perform necessary job responsibilities.

Shall exhibit pleasant and dignified supervisory manners, be neat in appearance and can adjust to change.

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

CONTRACT WORKDAYS: 260 Days

RESPONSIBLE TO: Fleet Head Mechanic and Transportation Supervisor

SUPERVISES: N/A

GENERAL

RESPONSIBILITIES: To provide motor vehicle and school bus maintenance program services and repairs for total fleet.

To provide an efficient, safe, preventative maintenance program for the Solon City Schools' school bus and vehicle fleet.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND

Responsibilities

Ability to diagnose and repair district automotive equipment.

Help maintain a current inventory of supplies and equipment.

Help to provide an efficient and effective system of routing and scheduling automotive maintenance and preventive care.

Helps to maintain the system for the receipt and issuance of parts and supplies and the keeping of records and inventories.

Promotes high standards of safety and good housekeeping methods in all work connected areas.

Prepares buses for the annual State Highway Patrol inspection, maintaining all buses in a condition fit to meet the requirements of that inspection and any spot inspections made by the patrol as required of the head mechanic.

Repairs or causes to be repaired any mechanical, electrical or appearance defect in the vehicles of the fleet.

Conducts a preventative maintenance program on all vehicles, removing them from service, if need be, for lubrication, adjustment and inspection, with the direction from the head mechanic.

May be assigned to pick up parts when needed, observing rules set up by the administration governing efficient use of time for this purpose.

Orders outside repairs for vehicles or their components, when such repairs are beyond the abilities of the staff or shop facilities available, under the direction of the head mechanic.

Assists supervisor in keeping accurate records of service performed on vehicles.

Analyzes gasoline and diesel mileage of each vehicle in the fleet, using consumption data provided by the Supervisor of Transportation as a means of monitoring the condition of each vehicle, taking any possible action to improve gas mileage.

Reports to the head mechanic each instance where the condition of a vehicle indicates driver abuse.

Maintains the tools and equipment needed to operate the Vehicle Maintenance Shop, keeping inventory records and securing them from theft or misuse.

Assists the head mechanic in the preparation of specifications for school bus bids.

Performs related tasks as assigned by the head mechanic.

Must be experienced in air and hydraulic brakes, troubleshooting, and repairing.

Must be experienced in electrical, troubleshooting and repairing.

Must be experienced in diesel engines, repairing and maintenance.

Must be experienced in gas engines, repairing and maintenance.

Experience needed in suspension.

Replacement of cross members and bodywork.

Have experience in repairing or replacing upholstery.

Must have certification or be certified by a legitimate organization or training center for brakes, diesel engine repair, and gasoline engine repairs.

  • Must obtain Commercial Drivers License (CDL) within 45 days of employment. Failure to do so may result in loss of employment.

Five years experience (or Journeyman's Card) in the mechanic field is preferred.

Also, any other duties related to vehicle maintenance.
