What are the responsibilities and job description for the Engineering Intern - Product Development (Industrial Design and Lab Technician) position at Solo Stove?
The Product Development Intern will support the Product Development group through concept ideation, CAD modeling, prototype builds, product testing, and documentation. This hybrid role is ideal for someone who enjoys both creative problem-solving and hands-on technical work.
You will collaborate with Industrial Designers, Engineers, Product Managers and Product Marketers to help evaluate product performance, improve usability, and support innovation initiatives across the product portfolio.
Industrial Design Support
- Assist in concept sketching, brainstorming, and product ideation sessions
- Create 2D and 3D CAD models for product concepts and prototype iterations
- Support development of presentation renderings, mockups, and visual communication materials
- Research materials, finishes, manufacturing processes, and market trends
- Help evaluate ergonomics, usability, and customer experience considerations
Prototype & Lab Technician Support
- Build and assemble physical prototypes and test fixtures
- Operate workshop tools, lab equipment, and fabrication machinery safely
- Conduct product testing including thermal, durability, airflow, combustion, and usability evaluations
- Document test procedures, collect performance data, and summarize findings
- Maintain organization of the product lab, workshop, and testing inventory
- Assist with product tear-downs, benchmarking, and competitive analysis
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with Engineering and Product teams to refine concepts into manufacturable solutions
- Participate in product reviews and development meetings
- Help track development timelines, prototype iterations, and test results
- Support continuous improvement initiatives across the development process
Qualifications
- Pursuing a degree in Industrial Design,Product Design, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Technology, or related field
- Strong interest in outdoor products, consumer goods, or experiential product design
- Familiarity with CAD software such as SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Rhino, or similar
- Comfortable working hands-on with tools, prototypes, and physical testing
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to balance creative thinking with technical execution
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- Positive attitude and willingness to learn in a fast-paced environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with 3D printing, laser cutting, or shop fabrication tools
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite or rendering software
- Basic understanding of manufacturing processes such as sheet metal fabrication or injection molding
- Passion for camping, outdoor living, or fire-related products
- Previous internship, workshop, or lab experience is a plus
