Soliant
Albuquerque, NM Part Time
POSTED ON 1/4/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 2/2/2026
VocoVision recruits experienced sign language interpreters for remote educational programs serving students throughout New Mexico. Our interpreter positions provide critical communication access that empowers Deaf and Hard of Hearing students to succeed in virtual learning environments.

Position Description

Remote interpreting brings unique rewards and challenges. You'll work approximately 36-37.5 hours weekly during regular school schedules, providing interpretation services for a diverse caseload of 45-55 students across elementary, middle, and high school grade levels. The virtual format requires interpreters who combine excellent linguistic skills with technological competence and strong independent work habits.

Your interpretation services enable full educational participation. This includes real-time interpretation of classroom instruction across all subject areas, support during interactive activities and class discussions, interpretation for individual student check-ins and consultations, participation in IEP meetings and educational planning sessions, and facilitation of communication between students, teachers, and support staff. The role demands versatility as you move between different grade levels, teaching styles, and content complexity throughout each day.

Core Responsibilities

Educational interpreters serve as language professionals within educational teams. Daily work involves preparing for upcoming lessons and specialized vocabulary, delivering accurate interpretation that conveys both content and classroom dynamics, monitoring visual access and communication effectiveness, advocating for environmental modifications when needed, and maintaining detailed records of services provided. You'll also coordinate with teachers about classroom management strategies that support communication access and participate in professional development focused on educational interpreting.

Technical management is integral to remote interpretation. You'll conduct pre-session equipment checks and troubleshooting, optimize camera angles and lighting for each interpreting situation, manage platform features including screen sharing and breakout rooms, communicate proactively about technical issues affecting service delivery, and maintain professional backup plans for connectivity problems.

Essential Qualifications

Required Credentials:

  • EIPA performance score: 4.0 minimum (scores below 4.0 do not meet requirements)
  • Written EIPA: Completed with passing results
  • School interpreting experience: Minimum 2 years in K-12 educational environments
  • State compliance: Ability to meet New Mexico interpreter requirements for educational settings

Professional Skills

  • Advanced ASL fluency appropriate for educational content
  • Knowledge of educational interpreting role and ethical guidelines
  • Proven ability to interpret across subject areas and grade levels
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Professional communication with educational teams and families

Technology Requirements

Successful virtual interpreting depends on reliable technology infrastructure. Required equipment includes high-speed internet with consistent bandwidth for video streaming, professional-quality webcam with manual focus and positioning controls, professional lighting setup ensuring clear sign visibility without shadows or glare, quiet workspace with professional background free from distractions, and secondary internet connection or mobile hotspot for backup access.

Characteristics of Successful Candidates

Beyond meeting minimum qualifications, exceptional interpreters demonstrate genuine commitment to educational access and student success. Valuable attributes include extensive experience interpreting across the full K-12 range, familiarity with academic vocabulary in diverse subject areas, proactive approach to identifying and resolving communication access barriers, strong professional relationships and team collaboration skills, and commitment to continuous professional development in educational interpreting practices. Interpreters who understand Deaf culture within educational contexts and who balance advocacy with professional boundaries excel in these positions.
