Soliant
Grand Rapids, MI Part Time
POSTED ON 1/6/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 2/5/2026
VocoVision connects skilled sign language interpreters with remote educational opportunities that transform student accessibility. We're building a pipeline of exceptional interpreters ready to support Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in virtual classroom settings where clear communication creates academic success.

Position Overview

This remote interpreting role serves students across elementary through high school grade levels in a fully virtual format. Interpreters typically work 35-37.5 hours per week, providing real-time interpretation during live instruction, student consultations, and team meetings. You'll work with a diverse caseload of approximately 45-55 students, adapting your interpreting approach to meet individual communication preferences and learning styles.

Virtual interpretation requires strong technical skills combined with interpreting expertise. You'll facilitate communication between teachers and students, support classroom discussions, interpret educational content across subject areas, and ensure Deaf and Hard of Hearing students have full access to their education. The remote environment demands excellent camera presence, clear signing that translates well through video, and the ability to manage interpretation logistics independently.

Key Responsibilities

Your role centers on providing linguistically and culturally appropriate interpretation services. Daily responsibilities include interpreting classroom instruction across multiple subjects, facilitating communication during small group activities and one-on-one sessions, attending and interpreting IEP meetings and parent conferences, collaborating with teachers to prepare for specialized vocabulary and content, and maintaining professional boundaries while advocating for student communication access.

Technical preparation is essential in the virtual environment. You'll test equipment before each session, position lighting and cameras for optimal signing visibility, coordinate with platform administrators to resolve connectivity issues, and maintain backup communication methods for technical interruptions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • EIPA Score: 4.0 & Written Exam
  • Written EIPA: Successfully completed (required)
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years interpreting in K-12 educational settings
  • Technical Setup: Reliable high-speed internet, professional webcam, quality lighting
  • Availability: Consistent schedule during school hours in assigned time zone

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with RID or NIC certification including the written component bring additional value to our teams. Experience with Deaf culture in educational contexts, familiarity with educational interpreting best practices, and knowledge of academic vocabulary across subject areas strengthen applications.

Work Environment

Remote work offers flexibility while maintaining professional standards. Interpreters work from dedicated home office spaces with appropriate backgrounds, minimal distractions, and professional presentation. The virtual format requires strong self-management skills and the ability to maintain focus during extended video sessions.
