What are the responsibilities and job description for the Operator 2 position at Soldier Township?
Soldier Township is located just north of the Topeka city limits, between 75 highway and K4 highway, and maintains over 125 miles of paved roads.
Our current work schedule is Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
OPERATOR II
a) SUMMARY: Under direction, performs work of moderate difficulty in the operation of construction equipment. Must be able to perform all duties required of Operator I and, in addition, must skillfully operate backhoe, excavator, skid loader, backhoe, chip spreaders, asphalt laydown machine and distributor. Must be able to lay asphalt to the proper grade and spread rock to the desired thickness. Performs all other related duties as required.
b) ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: Operates all road maintenance equipment, cleaning ditches, finish grade leveling and patching; operates the asphalt laydown machine, and distributor, including being able to read the gauges for set-up of spraying asphalt, as well as knowing the maintenance of the machines, including servicing after use; operates the chip spreader, fills out timesheets and equipment sheets and must have full knowledge of work orders and feature numbers pertaining to work done. Other duties as assigned.
c) REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS: Considerable knowledge of uses of tools, materials and equipment used in routine maintenance and repair. Good knowledge of the care and maintenance of different types of roads; good knowledge of service and maintenance requirement of equipment used. Ability to operate all listed equipment in most uses; ability to follow and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to perform strenuous physical labor.
d) EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school graduate or GED and one (1) year experience in the use of tool and equipment used in road maintenance and construction.
e) CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Possession of a valid Class A Kansas Commercial Driver’s License.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Hiring conditional upon passing drug/alcohol testing and is subject to random testing throughout employment.
