THE POSITION:

Under general supervision, performs a variety of routine clerical support work in the processing of legal and other official documents such as court actions, subpoenas, criminal warrants; performs related duties as required.

This is the entry level in the Legal Procedures Clerk series in which incumbents must possess basic clerical skills. This position is characterized by the responsibility for the preparation, processing and recording of legal and other official documents such as court actions, subpoenas, criminal warrants, legal descriptions and official notices. It is distinguished from the Legal Procedures Clerk in that the latter is the journey level working independently, and has responsibility for more technical aspects of the work and more discretion in decision making.

The eligible list created as a result of this recruitment will be used to fill full-time and part-time regular, limited-term or extra-help positions as vacancies occur in the Probation Department and Sheriff's Office. 


POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Three (3) months of full-time clerical work experience.


OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Applicants are required to demonstrate a net typing speed of forty (40) words per minute.

  • Possession of or the ability to obtain a valid Class C California driver's license may be required.


DOCUMENT SUBMITTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Please note that if you do not have a typing certificate, we will administer an online typing exam. If you choose to submit a typing certificate, a copy must be submitted by the final filing deadline. The certificate must contain a minimum NET speed of forty (40) words per minute. It must be a timed 3 - 5 minute test, include the gross number of words typed per minute, and the number of errors. It may not be more than 12 months old at the time of application and must be from an accredited school or a qualified agency with an examiner's signature. Certificates obtained through the internet (online) will not be accepted.


Applicants that have participated in prior Solano County skills testing must contact recruitment@solanocounty.gov by the final filing deadline to request their prior results be applied to this recruitment – this will not be done automatically. Prior results cannot be more than 12 months old at the time of application.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

Positions allocated to this class may require bilingual skills.

Recruiting requirements may be set to test typing, word processing and/or data entry speed, however, these skills are not the primary areas to be measured in the selection process.

Candidates for positions in this class will be required to pass a background investigation in accordance with applicable law, regulation and/or policy.

May need to obtain CLETS training and authorization.

Incumbents in this classification may be flexibly staffed to the Legal Procedures Clerk Journey, without further examination, after the successful completion of one-year of satisfactory performance upon the approval and discretion of the Department Head.

Independent travel may be required.


SELECTION PROCESS

07/17/26 – 5:00pm (PST) – Deadline to submit application and required documents.

08/17/26 – Tentative week for written and typing exam.

Based on the information provided in the application documents, the qualified applicants may be invited for further examination and will either be pre-scheduled by the Department of Human Resources or be invited to self-schedule. All applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. Depending upon the number of applications received, the selection process may consist of an initial application screening, a mandatory information meeting, a supplemental questionnaire assessment, a written and/or practical exam, an oral board exam, or any combination listed. Responses to supplemental questions may be used as screening and testing mechanisms and will be used to assess an applicant’s ability to advance in the process; as such, responses to supplemental questions should be treated as test examination responses. A minimum score of 70% is required to continue in the selection process, unless otherwise announced. 

All potential new hires and employees considered for promotion to management, confidential positions or unrepresented positions will be subject to a background and reference check after contingent job offer is accepted.  These provisions are subject to change.

VETERAN'S PREFERENCE POINTS: 

To be eligible, applicant must have served at least 181 consecutive days of active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States and have received either an honorable discharge or a general discharge under honorable conditions.  A COPY OF THE DD 214, SHOWING DISCHARGE TYPE (GENERALLY COPY 4), MUST BE RECEIVED IN THE HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT BY THE FINAL FILING DATE (or APPLICATION REVIEW DEADLINE). Applicants who have a service connected disability must also submit a recent award letter from the VA stating they are receiving disability benefits for service connected reasons.  

Veteran applicants for initial County employment with an honorable or general under conditions discharge shall receive five (5) points added to their combined score. Disabled veterans rated at not less than 30% disability shall have ten (10) points added to their combined score. Veteran’s preference points will only be added to passing scores in competitive open examinations.
