Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Database Platform Engineer to design, develop, and automate database platforms and services across cloud and on-premises environments. This role is ideal for an experienced SQL Server professional who has progressed beyond traditional database administration into database platform engineering, infrastructure automation, and cloud database services.
The engineer will help build scalable, reusable database platform capabilities that internal technology teams can consume through standardized services and automation. The environment is primarily Microsoft SQL Server, with additional exposure to other database technologies.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, and enhance database platforms across Microsoft Azure, AWS, and on-premises environments.
- Develop automation and infrastructure-as-code solutions to provision, configure, and manage database platform services.
- Build reusable, standardized database capabilities that enable internal application and infrastructure teams to consume database services efficiently.
- Automate database platform deployment, configuration, and operational processes using tools such as Terraform, Ansible, and PowerShell.
- Support cloud database services, including Azure SQL Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Azure SQL Managed Instance.
- Design and implement database platform solutions that address scalability, reliability, high availability, and disaster recovery.
- Collaborate with infrastructure, application development, and engineering teams to understand requirements and deliver automated platform capabilities.
- Apply engineering best practices to improve platform consistency, maintainability, and operational efficiency.
- Troubleshoot complex database platform and automation issues and develop sustainable, repeatable solutions.
- Contribute to the ongoing evolution of enterprise database engineering practices across cloud and on-premises environments.
Required Qualifications
- 10 years of hands-on Microsoft SQL Server experience.
- Strong experience with database platform engineering, beyond traditional DBA administration and routine database support.
- Hands-on experience with infrastructure-as-code and automation tools such as Terraform, Ansible, and/or PowerShell.
- Experience with Microsoft Azure database services, particularly Azure SQL PaaS and Azure SQL Managed Instance.
- Experience with AWS database services or cloud database platform implementations.
- Strong understanding of database high availability, disaster recovery, and platform reliability.
- Experience automating database provisioning, configuration, deployment, or platform management.
- Ability to design reusable database services and automation that can be consumed by other technology teams.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Ability to explain technical concepts clearly and demonstrate hands-on knowledge of technologies listed on the resume.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Oracle, DataStax, or other enterprise database technologies.
- Experience with Oracle Exadata.
- Experience building and maintaining database platforms across hybrid cloud and on-premises environments.
- Experience developing standardized, self-service database capabilities for enterprise technology teams.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is an experienced SQL Server professional who has evolved from traditional database administration into database platform engineering. They understand core database administration principles but focus on engineering the automation, infrastructure, and reusable services that enable other teams to provision and consume database capabilities.
Candidates whose experience is limited to routine DBA responsibilities, such as user permissions, basic maintenance, and performance monitoring, will not meet the primary needs of this role without substantial platform engineering and automation experience.
