Overview
The Plant General Manager will lead and oversee all aspects of plant operations for a hazardous waste TSD (Treatment, Storage, and Disposal) facility. This position is responsible for ensuring environmental health and safety compliance, managing P&L, driving operational excellence, and leading both direct and indirect staff. The ideal candidate has strong leadership skills, hazardous waste expertise, and a proven track record managing plant operations.
Leadership & People Management
- Lead, coach, and develop plant managers and supervisors, providing continuous feedback and performance evaluations.
- Oversee recruitment, training, and development of plant staff to build an effective, diverse, and engaged workforce.
- Conduct regular meetings to align staff on safety, compliance, and operational priorities.
- Promote a strong culture of teamwork, accountability, and safety.
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure full compliance with federal, state, and local environmental and hazardous waste regulations.
- Train and enforce safety protocols to maintain a safe and compliant workplace.
- Resolve hazards or unsafe practices quickly and effectively.
Operations & Customer Experience
- Oversee inbound, processing, and outbound hazardous waste operations, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency.
- Maintain waste inventory controls and documentation in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Act with urgency to resolve customer concerns and ensure excellent service delivery.
Financial & Plant Management
- Manage full P&L responsibilities, including budgeting, forecasting, and cost control.
- Oversee capital expenditures, asset management, and facility maintenance.
- Drive continuous improvement in productivity, safety, and operational efficiency.
- Partner with leadership on strategic initiatives and long-term planning.
Work Environment
- Onsite role requiring PPE (eye protection, hard hat, safety footwear, Tyvek coveralls, respirator when necessary).
- Must be able to pass a physical and background check.
- Willingness to travel up to 20% via automobile or commercial airline.
- Hands-on leadership style, working closely with plant staff and regional leadership.
Qualifications
- Experience: 7 years in plant operations with at least 3–5 years managing hazardous waste in a TSD facility. Proven P&L management experience required.
- Leadership: 7 years of people management experience, including coaching, training, and performance management.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in an environmental-related field preferred (not required) or equivalent relevant work experience.
- Certifications: Current 40-hour OSHA training. Valid driver’s license. Knowledge of DOT regulations required.
- Strong understanding of hazardous waste regulations, compliance, and industry standards.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including presenting to groups.
- Financial and budget management expertise.
- Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and process improvement mindset.
- Proficiency with plant management systems and business applications.
- Knowledge of lean management, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement methodologies a plus.
