About the Role:


The Butcher/Meat Cutter plays a critical role in ensuring the quality and presentation of meat products offered to customers. This position involves expertly cutting, trimming, and preparing various types of meat according to specific customer orders and safety standards. The role requires a deep understanding of meat cuts, proper handling techniques, and adherence to hygiene and food safety regulations. The butcher will also be responsible for maintaining inventory, minimizing waste, and collaborating with other team members to meet customer demands efficiently. Ultimately, this role contributes to customer satisfaction by providing high-quality, precisely prepared meat products in a timely manner.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience as a butcher or meat cutter in a retail or food service environment.
  • Knowledge of meat cuts, trimming techniques, and safe handling practices.
  • Ability to operate meat cutting tools and equipment safely and effectively.
  • Understanding of food safety regulations and sanitation standards.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification in meat cutting or food safety (e.g., ServSafe).
  • Experience working with a variety of meats including specialty or exotic cuts.
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to communicate effectively.
  • Physical stamina to stand for extended periods and lift heavy items as needed.
  • Familiarity with inventory management and ordering systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Cut, trim, and prepare different types of meat including beef, pork, poultry, and lamb according to customer specifications and company standards.
  • Ensure all meat products are handled and stored in compliance with food safety and sanitation regulations.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the work area, tools, and equipment to uphold health and safety standards.
  • Assist customers by providing knowledgeable recommendations on meat selection, cooking methods, and portion sizes.
  • Manage inventory levels by receiving deliveries, inspecting meat quality, and rotating stock to minimize waste.
  • Collaborate with team members to fulfill special orders and maintain efficient workflow during busy periods.

Skills:

The required skills enable the butcher to perform precise cutting and trimming of meat, ensuring product quality and customer satisfaction. Knowledge of food safety and sanitation is essential to maintain a clean and safe work environment, preventing contamination and spoilage. Customer service skills are used daily to assist shoppers in selecting appropriate meat products and providing cooking advice. Physical stamina and manual dexterity are necessary to handle tools and heavy products efficiently throughout the workday. Preferred skills such as certification and inventory management enhance the butcher's ability to maintain compliance and optimize stock levels, contributing to overall operational success.
