What are the responsibilities and job description for the Physician Assistant Float position at Society of Emergency Medicine PAs (SEMPA)?
Job Title: Physician Assistant
Reports to: EHM PA Regional Managers
Appointment: Full time
Exempt/Non-exempt: Exempt
Compensation: 200k-250k annually
Job Summary: The float PA is prepared to deliver primary health care, including but not limited to: recognition and management of common illnesses and injuries in the Emergency
Department and/or inpatient setting (HM, ICU), some of which may be determined by protocol; provision of care across the health care continuum with emphasis on the early detection and treatment of disease, as well as prevention.
Essential Non-Clinical Functions Of Job
Employment will be governed by the policies of RWJBarnabas Health. HR offer letter will outline eligibility of benefits along with terms and conditions of employment.
The purpose is to provide support to EHM/RWJBH sites with temporary staffing shortages
Float APP will be provided monthly assignments by EHM APP leadership with a minimum of 6 weeks’ notice.
After monthly assignments are finalized by APP Regional Managers, Float APP will directly communicate with APP site leadership/scheduler to determine scheduling. It is understood, due to scheduling challenges that the site may not provide in entirety the requested dates but a good faith effort is in place.
Prior to the first clinical shift at a new site, a minimum of one orientation shift will be scheduled.
Scheduling preference will be given to SST clinicians with regard to the following:

Essential Non-Clinical Functions Of Job
- PA must be flexible and have the ability to travel to various RWJBarnabas locations on a regular basis based on staffing needs.
- PA must be able to work proficiently in HM, EM, and ICU
- Work clinical shifts
- Membership to the medical staff and/or allied health staff
- Maintains appropriate certifications, licenses, and hospital privileges
- Obtains and records patient history and performs physical examinations
- Responsible for completing a medical screening exam
- Perform diagnostic and therapeutic studies
- Orders diagnostic laboratory tests, radiological studies or other therapies as appropriate
- Establishes diagnostic decision-making and initiates a treatment plan, which may include ordering medications, additional therapeutic modalities, etc.
- Coordinates patient care with other members of the health care team. Initiates consultation request to other health professionals to provide more comprehensive patient management.
- Instructs and counsels patients regarding mental and physical health; referring patients to appropriate specialists/resources
- Adequately manages patient flow in the ED/HM/ICU
- Performing other procedures as allowed by state law and under the direction of your supervising or collaborating physician
- Active participation in department staff meetings and risk management education
- Thorough and timely chart completion
- Completes required courses, i.e. HIPAA, EMTALA and other CME /CEU requirements
- Must be able work extended hours including weekdays, overnights, weekends, and holidays
- Medical knowledge, broad based understanding of clinical emergency and hospital medicine
- Strong communication skills, written and verbal
- Maintains good working relationships with ED/HM/ICU team and hospital medical staff
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Works within legal, regulatory and ethical practice standards
- Flexibility with scheduling and willing to help out with urgent scheduling needs
- Must have a minimum of 5 years relevant EM, HM, and/or ICU experience, ideally candidate will be proficient in all.
- Certification in applicable professional boards (NCCPA, etc)
- Licenses to practice in the applicable State
- Encourage active membership in a professional and state organizations

- Float clinicians will provide a minimum of one but no more than 2 weekends a month (which include a Friday, Saturday or a Saturday, Sunday) unless otherwise agreed to.
- Float will provide a fair share of nights (up to half of their schedule per month), unless otherwise agreed to.
- Float clinician will provide availability for one "summer" holiday (Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day) and one "winter" holiday (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year)
