  • Demonstrated experience with online protocol review and management systems.
  • Previous experience with biosafety protocols and procedures.

Position Summary

The Safety/Risk Management professional is primarily responsible for providing comprehensive health, safety, and/or compliance services to campus partners. Responsibilities include managing the UGA IBC program. Requires staying abreast of federal, state, and local safety protocols, enforcing EPA laws, analyzing safety and risk information and reporting that information to appropriate parties, providing guidance to campus partners on appropriate safety and compliance protocols, and ensuring permits, licenses and records meet appropriate licensing requirements.

Responsibilities include serving as the IBC coordinator by assisting faculty/staff in submitting materials as required by the NIH Guidelines and the IBC , performing initial review of submitted materials, coordinating committee meetings, training new committee members, developing/implementing an electronic protocol distribution system, facilitating electronic discussion of protocols, tracking and compiling member comments, maintaining the protocol tracking database, informing faculty/staff of the status of pending research and teaching protocols, preparing meeting minutes and agendas, preparing and submitting the annual IBC status report to NIH - OBA , assuring that all protocol review procedures have been completed, as well as performing biosafety site visits to laboratories and reporting recommendations to principle investigators, assisting principle investigators on compliance issues involving with APHIS , CDC , NIH , EPA , etc., and performing biohazardous agent training, as needed, for UGA laboratory staff .

  • Coordinates initial and annual review processes for all protocols involving recombinant DNA , human, plant and animal pathogens, and biological toxins; including Select Agents and Toxins, preliminary analysis of submitted protocols to assure compliance with regulatory requirements, and to assure that sufficient information is provided in an appropriate manner to expedite review by the IBC ; document the protocol review process and actions taken by the IBC and communication with investigators and instructors; provide advice on preparation of new protocols, annual renewals and protocol modifications; respond to questions regarding biohazard regulations, the protocol review process or a specific protocol.
  • Coordination of protocol review includes monitoring of all protocols in all stages of the process (initial review by the coordinator, under review by the IBC , request for additional information sent to investigator, additional information under review by the committee).
  • The incumbent coordinates with the Administrative Specialist to assure that annual renewals and protocol modifications are processed in the same manner as new protocols, and that annual renewal reminders are sent to investigators/instructors in a timely manner. All of this information is confidential and time sensitive. As many as 30 to 40 protocols/annual renewals/modifications may be under review at any time.
  • Employee is also responsible for revision of the biosafety section website and appropriate biosafety manuals and policies, as well as advises faculty and staff on the classification and packaging of biological material for shipment, helping customers determine federal transport permit requirements and facilitates application for transport permits.
  • Maintains the protocol-tracking database and the biosafety section web site and the IBC website.
  • Prepares and maintains minutes of IBC meetings and agendas and supporting materials as needed.
  • The employee also serves as an alternate on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee ( IACUC ).
