Job Summary

By providing a learning environment that values critical thinking, curiosity, objectivity, and respect for diversity, the Biology Department seeks to guide students in the development of an understanding of life science concepts will enable them to make informed decisions about their career, the environment, and other areas of human endeavor as responsible, informed members of the community. Biology Department educators enable students to acquire skills and habits of mind that allow for safe, accurate, objective, and effective scientific inquiry. We also serve the diverse needs of the community by providing, through an appropriate array of life science courses, opportunities for every student to acquire a solid academic foundation upon which to become successful in his or her pursuit of further education, career, and a lifetime of learning.

The successful candidate will teach transfer-level lecture and laboratory courses in Microbiology and Introductory Biology courses. An educational background in Microbiology is required. Successful candidates will have a desire and demonstrated ability to work with undergraduate students from diverse cultures, disciplines, and academic backgrounds.

This appointment will begin in the Spring 2027 semester.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate a commitment to the philosophy and mission of a comprehensive community college.
  • Work collaboratively with others in a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • Work collaboratively in a diverse, inclusive, and student-centered environment, with students of various learning styles, cultures, identities, and life experiences.

Instructional Skills

  • Teach lecture and lab portions of college transfer-level courses in Microbiology and Introductory Biology.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach a diverse student body.
  • Maintain currency in subject content, technological advancements, and pedagogy within the discipline.
  • Adhere to general lab safety, including proper handling and disposal of chemicals and biohazard waste.
  • Demonstrated lab safety knowledge for a Microbiology Lab
  • Prepare and maintain bacterial cultures

Course Management

  • Use technology to enhance instruction, complete administrative tasks, and communicate effectively with the students and the campus community.
  • Create assessments that evaluate student learning outcomes.

Curriculum Development

  • Willingness to collaborate with colleagues to develop research-based curriculum and bring meaningful research opportunities to students.
  • Use a student-focused approach to create meaningful educational experiences.

Departmental Support

  • Participation in college and departmental activities, including committee work, assessment and development of new course modalities.
  • Willingness to travel to multiple campus locations as required by department needs.

Minimum Requirements

  • Master?s degree in microbiology or Biological Sciences.
  • Three semesters of instruction at the college level. This experience should include lecture and laboratory teaching in the following: Microbiology and Introductory Biology.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching Anatomy and Physiology
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Evidence of a collaborative approach in working both effectively and professionally with students and colleagues.
  • Knowledge of learning management software (LMS), such as Blackboard Ultra, or related programs.
  • Ability to use common laboratory equipment such as spectrophotometers, microscopes, balances, pipettes, and gel electrophoresis.
  • Knowledge of a second language
  • Demonstrated ability to teach in multiple modalities, including face-to-face, hybrid, online, and seven-week formats
  • Teaching lecture and lab portions of anatomy and physiology
