The Society for American Archaeology (SAA) is an international organization that, since its founding in 1934, has been dedicated to the research about and interpretation and protection of the archaeological heritage of the Americas. With more than 7,000 members, SAA represents professional archaeologists in colleges and universities, museums, government agencies, and the private sector. SAA has members in all 50 states as well as many other nations around the world.

In the newly created role of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ) specialist, you will take the lead in collecting data, communicating and reporting on the data, formulating and executing strategies, programs, and initiatives to create a more inclusive and diverse membership. Your pivotal role will be the driving force behind the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the programs and services of the Society.

This position is a valued contributor to the membership team and reports to the Deputy Executive Director.

Objectives

  • Responsible for conducting a community-wide member needs assessment, which includes defining and creating new questions about diversity
  • Review past Member Needs Assessments to identify longitudinal data that needs to continue to be collected.
  • Research or develop additional questions to establish the current state of diversity within our community and continue to assess programs and services, including an assessment of gaps, barriers, or inequities that may exist.
  • Engage key stakeholder committees to communicate the survey instrument and to assess its findings.
  • Lead the effort to launch the assessment and convey its importance to members.
  • Transfer data from assessment into our Association Management Software (iMIS) in a manner consistent with GDPR and other laws.
  • Communicate the findings to members and staff, including translating key summaries and materials into Spanish.
  • Support members whose primary language is Spanish.

Responsible for assembling data from Editorial Manager to understand who is submitting and authoring in SAA journals

  • Develop a plan for getting the available data.
  • Organize and interpret the data to understand who is submitting and who is publishing in the journals.
  • Communicate and present the data to members and staff.
  • Responsible for updating and conducting a post-Annual Meeting evaluation

  • Lead the effort to create and launch the assessment and convey its importance to attendees.
  • Analyze the data and share the results with members and staff.
  • Assess the data sets to make data-driven recommendations to implement new, and refine existing, programs and services that address the identified needs of our diverse membership.

    Develop and communicate key metrics and benchmarks to measure progress on initiatives.

    Analyze demographic and participation data to identify trends and gaps in representation.

    Ensure Association Management Software is optimized to help segment and support Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice goals.

    Act as the staff liaison with the Committee on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice.

    Develop communications to raise awareness of DEIJ efforts and celebrate diversity achievements.

    Responsible for proposing updates to the strategic plan and suggesting ways to enhance the development of equity goals.

    Work collaboratively with staff, and with board and committee members in the implementation of SAA’s vision and strategic plans and initiatives.

    Minimum Requirements

    The position requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a social science, public or business administration, or communication with at least three to five (3-5) years of experience in membership work at an association. While not required, a Master’s Degree in a related field is preferred, especially archaeology.

    In-depth knowledge of DEIJ principles, best practices, and emerging trends in diversity and inclusion.

    Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with members and staff and facilitate conversations.

    Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and influence stakeholders to champion DEIJ initiatives.

    Ability to analyze, organize, and discuss quantitative data sets; skill in developing, interpreting, and understanding statistics and data; and able to prepare and present information publicly.

    Expertise with Association Management Software, particularly iMIS, to help ensure effective communication with our members.

    Sensitivity to cultural differences and a commitment to promoting equity and fairness.

    Passionate about advancing diversity and inclusion and creating a positive and supportive environment for members and employees.

    Ability to serve as an advocate for individuals of all ethnicities, genders, ages, and backgrounds.

    Knowledgeable about GDPR and other relevant laws regarding data privacy and data protections.

    Bilingual in Spanish and English is a BIG plus.

    Able to work independently.
