Mobile Application Developer - Mid

About OnlyPlants

OnlyPlants is a consumer gardening platform designed to make planning, growing, and maintaining a successful garden simpler and more approachable.

We are looking for a Mobile Application Developer who is excited about building and improving a consumer mobile product and contributing to its technology and user experience.

Position Summary

The Mid-Level Mobile Application Developer will help develop, test, release, and maintain the OnlyPlants cross-platform mobile application for iOS and Android. The role will work primarily in our React Native, TypeScript, and Expo stack and collaborate with product, UX/UI, backend engineering, and business teams to turn requirements into intuitive, reliable mobile experiences. The ideal candidate has professional mobile development experience, can take assigned features from implementation through testing, and knows when to seek guidance on complex technical issues. This person should be comfortable in a startup environment where priorities can evolve quickly.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, test, and maintain features for the OnlyPlants mobile application for iOS and Android using React Native, TypeScript, and Expo.
  • Implement mobile functionality based on product requirements, user feedback, designs, and business priorities.
  • Work with product, UX/UI, backend engineering, and business teams to clarify requirements and deliver mobile capabilities.
  • Translate designs and wireframes into responsive, intuitive, and accessible mobile interfaces.
  • Integrate the application with RESTful APIs, backend services, authentication systems, and third-party platforms.
  • Implement application features such as user profiles, push notifications, location-aware experiences, camera/image functionality, and content as needed.
  • Write clean, maintainable, reusable TypeScript and React Native code that follows established project standards.
  • Write and maintain unit and integration tests using the team's established testing practices; perform functional validation when appropriate.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve application bugs, development-environment issues, build problems, and user-facing defects, escalating complex issues when needed.
  • Help improve application performance, reliability, usability, and overall user experience.
  • Participate in code reviews and follow established GitHub issue, branch, pull request, and continuous integration practices.
  • Assist with mobile builds, release preparation, and deployments through Expo/EAS and the Apple App Store and Google Play processes.
  • Review application feedback and report potential improvements or recurring issues to the team.
  • Keep current with relevant mobile development tools, frameworks, security practices, and engineering standards.
  • Communicate progress, risks, dependencies, and blockers clearly, and work constructively with a small cross-functional team.

Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Approximately 2–4 years of professional mobile application development experience.
  • Experience building, testing, and maintaining production mobile applications.
  • Hands-on experience with React Native and TypeScript; experience with Expo or a comparable React Native toolchain is strongly preferred.
  • Experience integrating mobile applications with RESTful APIs and backend services.
  • Working knowledge of mobile UI/UX principles, responsive layouts, state management, and cross-platform behavior.
  • Experience using Git and collaborative development practices such as feature branches, pull requests, and code reviews.
  • Ability to debug application issues and learn to troubleshoot mobile development and build environments.
  • Understanding of mobile application security, authentication, and data protection fundamentals.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn.
  • Ability to manage assigned work independently while collaborating effectively and asking for guidance when appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing and supporting cross-platform applications for both iOS and Android.
  • Familiarity with native iOS/Swift or Android/Kotlin concepts for investigating platform-specific issues.
  • Experience with cloud-hosted APIs and services, such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
  • Exposure to Expo Application Services (EAS), GitHub Actions, or other mobile build and CI/CD tools.
  • Experience with push notifications, analytics, payments, location services, camera/image functionality, or other consumer mobile features.
  • Experience preparing or publishing applications through the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
  • Experience working in a startup, entrepreneurial, consumer-facing, or community-driven product environment.
  • Familiarity with automated testing, regression testing, and accessibility or mobile usability standards.
