POSITION SUMMARY: Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE)

Under the supervision of the Program Manager and the Emergency Department provider on duty, this role provides direct care to patients 13 years of age and older who indicate sexual assault, intimate partner violence, or strangulation has occurred within the past 240 hours. This role also assesses follow-up needs, provides information on Crime Victim’s Compensation and other resources, and makes community referrals as needed. They will document the history and physical examination findings and collect potential evidence from victims. They may be required to testify to these findings in a court of law. This role will involve quarterly quality improvement staff meetings, as well as mandatory education sessions when new products or processes are introduced.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Under the supervision of the Program Manager and ED provider on duty, this role provides direct care to patients ages 13 and older who indicate sexual assault, intimate partner violence, or nonfatal strangulation has occurred within the past 240 hours (40%).
    1. Assesses the situation by conducting a forensic interview and obtaining details of the assault.
    2. Assesses injuries and completes forensic evidentiary examination.
    3. Assesses risk of sexually transmitted infection, pregnancy, and HIV and provides prophylactic treatments, testing and counseling as indicated.
    4. Provides acute crisis evaluation and intervention.
    5. Triages injuries and symptoms and consults with staff physician as needed.
  2. Documents the history and physical examination findings in the patient’s record (30%).
    1. Maintains and reviews patient records, charts, and other pertinent information.
    2. Records physical examination findings on the patient record.
    3. Records tests and examination results.
    4. Utilize provided order sets in EPIC.
  3. Assesses follow-up needs, provides information and makes community referrals as needed.
    1. Encourages and facilitates follow-up care to include further psychological evaluation and intervention, further treatment of injuries, further treatment or evaluation for STIs, HIV, or pregnancy, follow-up examinations for injury re-documentation.
    2. Provides instructions for any additional medication obtainment and administration.
    3. Maintain good communication with the emergency department staff, Program Manager, and other community partners, including law enforcement members and patient advocates.
  4. Available to meet the variable needs of patient care (15%).
    1. Required to work 24-hour call shifts, including weekends and holidays.
    2. Will take a minimum of 1 24-hour call shift per week for a total of 4 a month. May work more as approved or desired.
    3. Responds to all phone calls / pages within 10 minutes.
    4. Responds to the emergency department / hospital within 30 minutes of being paged.
    5. May respond to other contracted sites for care of a victim or suspect.
  5. Attends a minimum of 4 quality improvement and staff meetings a year as well as mandatory education sessions when new products or processes are introduced (10%).
    1. Participates in quarterly quality improvement meetings and yearly performance evaluations, including yearly personal goal setting with the SAFE Program Manager.
    2. During the first year of employment, Program Manager will review all charts for accuracy and completeness. If necessary, there may be additional quality improvement meetings to attend.
    3. Responsible for reviewing and keeping up to date on any changes in evidentiary examination protocol or other program changes. These changes will be presented at the staff meetings but must also be reviewed by the examiner.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Education: Graduate of an accredited RN, MD, PA, or NP program.

Additional training requirements at the discretion of the program manager.

Required Licensure: Must possess a valid license as an RN, MD, PA, or NP in the State of Washington.

Specialty Certification: Current AHA CPR certification required. 40-hour SAFE/SANE certification class.

Required Experience: Minimum 2 years of clinical experience

Skills:

  • Knowledge of current practice and technique (for your individual license).
  • Knowledge of current practice and technique for SAFE exams.
  • Effective and compassionate interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to judge the appropriate action in response to changes, circumstances, or problems.
  • Ability to collaborate with others.
  • Knowledge of basic emergency procedures, triage protocol, and interventions.
  • Competency assessment after completion of training requirements at the discretion of the program manager.
  • Complies with all safety instructions, observes safe work practices, provides input on safety issues, and promotes a safe work environment.
  • Maintains regular and timely attendance.
  • Protects confidentiality.
  • Timely completion of all mandatory education and organizational requirements (i.e., for relevant licensure / certification, employee health and wellness requirements, annual trainings, etc.)

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Office and clinical settings with exposure to patient care areas.
  • Indoor healthcare environment. May be subject to occupational exposures, such as disease or bloodborne pathogen exposure.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Carrying, sitting, stretching, reaching, and standing required.
  • Lifting approximately 5-10 pounds.
  • Hours may be long and irregular. When working, most of the time will be spent on feet.

Benefit Eligibility Requirements - Employees regularly scheduled at least 20 hours per week.
