SMX Services & Consulting is seeking an Application Engineer to support the IRS Branded Prescription Drugs Application Support Systems Recompete. This role will support production operations, system maintenance, application engineering, performance monitoring, troubleshooting, technical documentation, cloud integration, and containerization of the BPD application environment.
The Application Engineer will support O&M of the existing production system while helping modernize the application environment through Red Hat OpenShift, Kubernetes, enterprise container platforms, AWS, and Azure.
Key Responsibilities- Support day-to-day operations and maintenance of the BPD production application and database environment.
- Monitor application and system performance across production and lower environments.
- Troubleshoot and resolve application, database, infrastructure, and operational issues.
- Support annual maintenance releases, application updates, infrastructure currency updates, and technical upgrades.
- Support IRWORKS ticket resolution and knowledge article updates.
- Prepare and maintain technical documentation, deployment documentation, system operations manuals, and user-facing materials.
- Support annual disaster recovery planning, testing, and execution.
- Support FISMA audit preparation, vulnerability remediation, Q-Compliance activities, and security documentation.
- Develop mitigation steps for findings identified through automated scans.
- Support patching, certificate updates, server maintenance, and environment readiness.
- Engineer and support containerized deployment of the BPD application using Red Hat OpenShift or equivalent Kubernetes-based platforms.
- Support integration into approved cloud environments, including AWS and/or Azure.
- Support centralized logging, monitoring, authentication, authorization, and operational reporting.
- Conduct monthly technical knowledge transfer sessions with IRS personnel.
- Support ad hoc Business Objects Enterprise reporting and related technical requests.
- 7-10 years of application engineering, systems engineering, application operations, or enterprise application support experience.
- Experience supporting Java-based web applications in production environments.
- Experience with Spring Core, Spring Boot, Spring Security, Hibernate, Bootstrap, JQuery, SQL Server, Windows Server, Linux Red Hat, and Splunk.
- Experience with SQL Server database integration, performance support, stored procedures, and application/database troubleshooting.
- Experience with cloud or container platforms such as OpenShift, Kubernetes, AWS, Azure, or enterprise container platforms.
- Experience supporting application monitoring, troubleshooting, patching, certificates, release support, and operational continuity.
- Experience creating and maintaining technical documentation.
- Experience supporting secure or regulated systems under FISMA, NIST, FedRAMP, or similar security frameworks.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work with government, business, technical, and security stakeholders.
- Hands-on Red Hat OpenShift and Kubernetes experience.
- AWS and/or Azure cloud integration experience.
- Experience deploying, managing, scaling, and monitoring containerized applications.
- Experience with Splunk monitoring and security event analysis.
- Experience with Q-Compliance, vulnerability remediation, audit support, and FISMA documentation.
- Experience with Section 508 testing and remediation.
- Experience with Business Objects Enterprise and Databricks.
- IRS, Treasury, or federal application support experience.
