What are the responsibilities and job description for the Installation Specialist position at SMRT Systems?
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Electronic Device Installation Technician with specialized knowledge of laundromat washers and dryers to install, configure, and maintain electronic devices in commercial laundry equipment across the United States. These devices enable wireless connectivity to payment kiosks, allowing remote activation and deactivation of washers and dryers based on customer payments. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with commercial laundry equipment, electronics installation, troubleshooting, and networking, with a focus on delivering high-quality service in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Installation of Electronic Devices: Install wireless electronic control devices into commercial washers and dryers (e.g., Speed Queen, Maytag, Whirlpool, or Electrolux) at laundromat facilities, ensuring seamless integration with existing machine control boards, wiring, and mechanical systems.
- Equipment Familiarity: Leverage in-depth knowledge of laundromat washer and dryer systems, including coin-operated, card-based, and smart-enabled models, to ensure proper device installation and compatibility with various machine types and brands.
- Wireless Connectivity Setup: Configure devices to communicate reliably with payment kiosks via wireless protocols (e.g., Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or proprietary systems), ensuring robust signal strength in high-traffic laundromat environments.
- System Testing and Calibration: Test installed devices to verify functionality, including payment processing, machine start/stop triggers, cycle monitoring, and kiosk communication, while accounting for the unique operational characteristics of commercial laundry equipment.
- Troubleshooting and Maintenance: Diagnose and resolve issues related to device malfunctions, connectivity problems, or integration failures, using expertise in laundromat equipment to address machine-specific challenges (e.g., control board errors, power supply issues, or mechanical interlocks).
- Collaboration with Vendors: Work closely with laundry equipment manufacturers, software providers, and laundromat management to ensure device compatibility with specific washer and dryer models and adherence to technical specifications.
- Customer Support and Training: Provide on-site training to laundromat staff on device operation, basic troubleshooting, and maintenance procedures, with an emphasis on how devices interact with washer and dryer systems.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate records of installations, configurations, and service activities, including detailed notes on equipment models, serial numbers, and any machine-specific modifications required.
- Compliance and Safety: Adhere to all safety regulations, electrical codes, and industry standards during installations and repairs, ensuring safe handling of high-voltage laundry equipment and a secure working environment.
- Travel: Perform installations and service calls at various laundromat locations across the US, as required.
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent; associate’s degree or certification in electronics, electrical engineering, or a related field preferred.

- Proven familiarity with the internal components, wiring, and control systems of commercial laundry equipment, including coin-operated, card-based, and smart-enabled models.
- Experience with wireless communication systems (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or similar) and their integration with commercial appliances.
- Knowledge of payment systems or point-of-sale (POS) integration is a plus.
- Technical Skills:
- Expertise in reading and interpreting technical schematics, wiring diagrams, and service manuals for commercial washers and dryers.
- Proficiency in troubleshooting laundry equipment issues, such as control board failures, sensor malfunctions, or power supply irregularities.
- Knowledge of low-voltage electronics, microcontrollers, and basic networking principles.
- Comfortable using hand tools, multimeters, and diagnostic equipment tailored to laundry equipment repair and electronics installation.
- Soft Skills:
- Strong problem-solving skills and meticulous attention to detail, especially when working with complex laundry machine systems.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills for interacting with laundromat staff and management.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively across multiple job sites.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, work in confined spaces (e.g., behind or inside laundry machines), and stand for extended periods.
- Travel Requirements: Willingness to travel regionally or nationally, with potential overnight stays. Valid driver’s license required.
- Certifications: Electrical or electronics certification (e.g., ETA, CompTIA, or equivalent) or laundry equipment repair certification (e.g., manufacturer-specific training) is a plus but not mandatory.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Extensive experience servicing or installing components in commercial laundry equipment from major brands like Speed Queen, Maytag, Whirlpool, or Electrolux.
- Familiarity with retrofitting modern control systems or IoT devices into older laundromat equipment models.
- Understanding of payment processing systems or kiosk software used in laundromats.
