Brake and Lamp / VSSI Inspector – Smog & Repair Shop (Sacramento, CA)
Established smog and auto repair shop in Sacramento is hiring a California BAR-licensed Vehicle Safety Systems Inspector (VSSI, formerly Brake and Lamp Inspector). We have more VSSI inspection demand than we can currently handle — steady work is already waiting.
What you'll do
- Perform VSSI (brake and lamp) inspections on passenger vehicles, salvage/revived salvage vehicles, and medium/heavy-duty trucks
- Document findings on shop-provided tablets with photos — our software sends everything straight to the service writer, so you spend your time inspecting, not writing up paperwork or chasing people down
- Depending on your skill set: smog inspections, diagnostics, and R&R work available for cross-trained techs
Must have
- Current California BAR Vehicle Safety Systems Inspection (VSSI) license — brake and lamp adjuster license holders encouraged to apply
- Ability to inspect thoroughly, fairly, and consistently with BAR guidelines
- Valid driver's license
Big plus (pays more)
- Smog inspector license (EO/EI)
- Diagnostic experience (drivability, electrical)
- R&R experience — suspension, brakes, steering
- Diesel / medium and heavy-duty truck experience
Pay & schedule
- $28–$38/hr depending on licenses and experience, plus per-inspection bonus
- Full-time preferred; part-time considered for licensed inspectors
- Paid training and license renewal support
- Shop-provided tablets and modern shop management software — minimal paperwork
