The Writer-Editor is responsible for providing major editorial and administrative assistance to the Publications and Recordings manager by helping to ensure the museum publications represent Native American perspectives with accuracy and sensitivity.

Qualifications
Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as researching, writing, editing and proofreading a variety of print (books, programs, exhibition scripts, signs, ephemera etc.) and electronic products, employing design skill and experience for publication projects, and applying knowledge of Native American history, culture, and the prevailing issues and perspectives of contemporary Native American communities to ensure that all projects conform to NMAI’s content development and educational standards.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.
Special Instructions for Foreign Education: If you are qualifying by education and/or you have education completed in a foreign college/university described above, it is your responsibility to provide transcripts and proof of U.S. accreditation for foreign study. In This Position, You Will
- Provide content and copy editing for all manuscripts, from books and catalogues to ephemera (e.g., invitations, brochures, and calendars). Work with authors, edit to improve educational content, grammatical accuracy, appropriateness of tone, and fluidity of writing style.
- For selected publications, such as invitations and brochures, you will be expected to write copy. This work requires attentiveness to style, conciseness, and factual accuracy. All writing is expected to be of the highest quality, communicating the museum’s mission and activities in a lively, accessible fashion
- For all publications manage, guide the production through the following stages: establishment of a production schedule, conception of rough design/format, editing and/or writing, photo research, fact-checking, word processing, reconciliation of design with budget, proofreading of galleys and mechanicals, blue line and color-proof inspection.
- Throughout all assignments, exercise sensitivity with respect to the collections and Native American points of view.
